Reaction of Nitro-Substituted Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes with Pyrazoles in DMSO: Unexpected Formation of Tandem Kornblum-Type Ring-Opening Oxidation/Aza-Michael Addition Products

Subaramaniam Thangamalar et al.

Summary: The ring-opening reaction of nitro-substituted donor-acceptor cyclopropanes with pyrazoles in DMSO was investigated. Unexpectedly, the cyclopropanes underwent Kornblum-type ring-opening oxidation with DMSO to form aroylmethylidene malonates as intermediates in the reactions. The intermediates further underwent aza-Michael addition with pyrazoles in tandem manner to give the corresponding aza-Michael adducts. The highlights of the methodology include the occurrence of ring-opening/oxidation under neutral conditions with DMSO and formation of aza-Michael adducts with pyrazoles under catalyst-free conditions.

Stereoretentive Catalytic [3+2]/[3+3]-Cycloaddition of Nonracemic Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes: Synthesis of Substituted Pyrrolidines and 1,2-Oxazinanes

Michael P. Doyle et al.

Summary: This study achieved a highly enantioselective synthesis of substituted pyrrolidines and 1,2-oxazinanes via stereoretentive [3 + 2]/[3 + 3]-cycloaddition of nonracemic donor-acceptor cyclopropanes with imines, triazines, and nitrones. The reactions were conducted under mild conditions and showed good to high yields with broad applicability. Compared to previous approaches using racemic cyclopropane reactants and chiral ligand catalysts, this study utilized enantioenriched donor-acceptor cyclopropanes as reactants with achiral catalysts.

Asymmetric (5+3) Annulation of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes with Imidazolidines: Access to Saturated 1,4-Diazocanes

Liangliang Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a copper-catalyzed (5 + 3) annulation of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes with imidazolidines was reported, providing a straightforward method to access a library of saturated 1,4-diazocanes. The asymmetric synthesis of optically active saturated 1,4-diazocanes was also achieved by two strategies: chirality transfer and dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation.

A novel type of donor-acceptor cyclopropane with fluorine as the donor: (3+2)-cycloadditions with carbonyls

Haidong Liu et al.

Summary: gem-Difluorocyclopropane diester has been used as a donor-acceptor cyclopropane in this study for the first time. It participates smoothly in (3 + 2)-cycloadditions with various aldehydes and ketones, resulting in the synthesis of densely functionalized gem-difluorotetrahydrofuran skeletons.

Enantioselective (8+3) Cycloadditions by Activation of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes Employing Chiral Bronsted Base Catalysis

David A. McLeod et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel enantioselective (8+3) cycloaddition reaction using a chiral bifunctional Bronsted base catalyst. The reaction leverages an anionic activation strategy and differs from typical Lewis-acid activation protocols. Experimental and computational results support the relevance of this reaction and its potential application in organic synthesis.

The Chemistry of Cyclopropanes and New Insights into Organocatalyzed Asymmetric Cyclopropanation

Estibaliz Sansinenea et al.

Summary: The cyclopropane structure has attracted attention in multiple investigations due to its prevalence in various natural products. It exhibits unique reactivity, particularly in 1,1-cyclopropanedicarboxylate compounds, which act as acceptor-donor cyclopropanes. Various methods have been developed to achieve cyclopropanes, including the Simmons-Smith reaction, diazoalkanes decomposition, and Michael-Initiated ring closure (MIRC). The asymmetric organocatalytic synthesis of cyclopropanes, using the MIRC method, has been successfully applied without the need for metal catalysts. This review presents different asymmetric organocatalytic syntheses of cyclopropanes from the last two decades until 2021.

Synergistic Sc(III)/Au(I)-Catalyzed Dearomative Spiroannulation of 2-(Ethynyl)aryl Cyclopropanes with 2-Aryl Indoles

Jun-An Xiao et al.

Summary: The diastereoselective assembly of spiroindolenines through a synergistic scandium/gold-catalyzed dearomative spiroannulation is presented. This protocol provides access to a wide range of spiroindolenine derivatives with an average yield of 86%, exhibiting moderate to excellent diastereoselectivities (up to 97:3 dr). Experimental studies support the feasibility of bimetallic relay catalysis, and the scale-up reaction and synthetic transformations of the spiroindolenine product demonstrate its synthetic utility.

Diastereoselective synthesis of tetrahydrobenzo[b]azocines by Lu(OTf)3-catalyzed [4+4] cycloaddition of donor-acceptor cyclobutanes with anthranils

Meifeng Hou et al.

Summary: In this study, the construction of N-heterocyclic eight-membered rings using Lu(OTf)(3) as a catalyst is reported. A formal [4+4] cycloaddition reaction of cyclobutane 1,1-diesters with anthranils was used to deliver oxa-bridged eight-membered heterocycles, providing a potential method for building complex azocine compounds.

Asymmetric Catalytic Reactions of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes

Yong Xia et al.

Summary: The donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes, due to the synergistic push-pull effect of vicinal electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups, are recognized as powerful building blocks for generating polyfunctional reactive intermediates. Enantioselective reactions of D-A cyclopropanes provide an efficient approach to enantioenriched acyclic and cyclic compounds. Chiral Lewis/Bronsted acids, transition metals, and organocatalysts have been designed for such transformations, including ring-openings, annulations, and rearrangements.

Reactions of Styrylmalonates with Aromatic Aldehydes: Detailed Synthetic and Mechanistic Studies

Denis D. Borisov et al.

Summary: The reactions of styrylmalonates with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of Lewis and Bronsted acids, along with their regularities, have been studied in detail. Various approaches have been developed for the synthesis of polysubstituted compounds with control over chemo-, regio-, stereo-, and diastereoselectivity. The mechanisms of these reactions were extensively studied using multinuclear NMR experiments, monitoring reactions in NMR tubes, and O-18 isotope labeling.

GaCl3-Mediated Cascade [2+4]-Cycloaddition/[4+2]-Annulation of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes with Conjugated Dienes: Strategy for the Construction of Benzobicyclo[3.3.1]nonane Skeleton

Maria A. Belaya et al.

Summary: Benzobicyclo[3.3.1]nonane derivatives were synthesized through a gallium trichloride mediated reaction of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes (DACs) with 1,3-dienes, involving a cascade ionic [2 + 4]-cycloaddition/Friedel-Crafts-type cyclization process. The method shows tolerance towards different substituents on the main framework and allows for potentially useful modifications on the benzobicyclo[3.3.1]nonane derivatives.
