Stromatolitic carbonates from the Middle Miocene of the western Pannonian Basin reflect trace metal availability in microbial habitats during the Badenian Salinity Crisis

Sebastian Viehmann et al.

Summary: Stromatolitic carbonates from the Oberpullendorf Basin in Austria provide a valuable opportunity to study the evolution of microbial habitats during the Badenian Salinity Crisis. Geochemical data of the carbonates show that variations in environmental conditions within the basin coincide with microbialite morphologies. Post-depositional alteration processes affected the carbonate samples to different degrees.

Progress towards an improved Precambrian seawater 87Sr/86Sr curve

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: The secular trend of seawater strontium isotope ratio provides important information about changes in ocean composition and global tectonic events. This study compiled and evaluated strontium isotope ratio data of Precambrian marine sedimentary rocks and generated an improved seawater Sr-87/Sr-86 curve. The results indicate an earlier deviation of seawater Sr-87/Sr-86 from the mantle, as well as stronger oscillations and better correspondence with supercontinent cycles than previously shown.

Contrasting nutrient availability between marine and brackish waters in the late Mesoproterozoic: Evidence from the Paranoa Group, Brazil

Eva E. Stueken et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that oxygen and nutrient limitations in marine environments during the Mesoproterozoic era may have delayed the rise of eukaryotic life on Earth, but riverine inputs could have provided nutrients to coastal habitats, making them habitable for complex organisms.

Cryptic sulfur cycling during the formation of giant gypsum deposits

L. Guibourdenche et al.

Summary: Salt giants are large-scale deposits formed in the geological past. This study reveals the dynamic biogeochemical environment during the formation of the Mediterranean salt giant and uncovers the existence of cryptic sulfur cycling, which has significant implications for carbon cycling.

Stromatolites as geochemical archives to reconstruct microbial habitats through deep time: Potential and pitfalls of novel radiogenic and stable isotope systems

Simon Hohl et al.

Summary: Understanding the origin and evolution of life on Earth, as well as potentially on other planets in our solar system, is fundamental for humanity. Microbial communities have evolved over the longest period in Earth's history. Stromatolites, ancient lithified microbial mats, hold the key to understanding the evolution of microbial life on Earth and provide insights for planetary studies.

Partitioning riverine sulfate sources using oxygen and sulfur isotopes: Implications for carbon budgets of large rivers

Katy E. Relph et al.

Summary: The research uses oxygen isotope ratios to partition sulfate sources, revealing diverse sulfuric acid weathering scenarios in the Mekong River basin with most CO2 released through the sulfuric acid weathering of carbonates.

Global patterns of nitrate isotope composition in rivers and adjacent aquifers reveal reactive nitrogen cascading

Ioannis Matiatos et al.

Summary: The isotopic data of nitrate in global rivers and shallow aquifers reveal differences in nitrate concentrations and nitrogen isotope composition between the two water bodies. Water temperature plays a role in affecting the isotopic composition of nitrate, with waste-related nitrogen source signals being more prominent in colder seasons. Isotopic assays are crucial for understanding nitrate pollution and informing effective agricultural and land management strategies.
