Water Interaction with Fe2NiP Schreibersite (110) Surface: a Quantum Mechanical Atomistic Perspective

Stefano Pantaleone et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is a critical element for all living creatures, but its origin and transformation in biological systems remain largely unknown. The most likely source of prebiotic phosphorus is iron-phosphide materials brought to the early Earth by intense meteoritic bombardment during the Archean era. Recent studies have shown that various oxygenated phosphorus compounds can be produced through simple wetting/corrosion processes from this material. In this study, computer simulations were used to investigate the wetting process of the iron-phosphide material, and the validity of the methodology and models was confirmed through comparison with experimental results.

First-Principles Surface Characterization and Water Adsorption of Fe3P Schreibersite

Riccardo Dettori et al.

Summary: The meteoritic mineral schreibersite, Fe3P, is proposed to be an abiotic source of phosphorus for life building materials. This study provides chemical insights into schreibersite interactions in aqueous environments and uncovers possible dissociation pathways, laying the foundation for further investigation on more reactive surfaces and understanding phosphorylated organic synthesis on primitive planets.

Explicit solvent effects on (110) ruthenium oxide surface wettability: Structural, electronic and mechanical properties of rutile RuO2 by means of spin-polarized DFT-MD

Fabrizio Creazzo et al.

Summary: The study examines the structural, electronic, and mechanical properties of crystalline ruthenium dioxide RuO2 in its rutile structure using forefront spin-polarized Density Functional Theory (DFT) and DFT-Molecular Dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations. The research focuses on the interplay between surface wettability, interfacial water dynamics, and surface chemical activity, providing insights into the explicit solvent effects on the (11 0)-RuO2 facet. Results show the dependence of physical and chemical properties on different degrees of surface wettability, with good agreement with experimental evidence and previous studies.

Ab Initio Computational Study on Fe2NiP Schreibersite: Bulk and Surface Characterization

Stefano Pantaleone et al.

Summary: The study suggests that iron/nickel phosphides in metallic meteorites may serve as a potential source of phosphorus, capable of reacting with water to produce oxygenated phosphorus compounds that can react with organic molecules to form bonds. Such a source of phosphorus is of significance for the absorption and utilization by living organisms.
