Field evidence for microplastic interactions in marine benthic invertebrates

Stefania Vecchi et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a significant concern for marine ecosystems globally, with closed seas like the Mediterranean being particularly affected. This study focused on the interactions between polychaetes and microplastics, revealing high ingestion rates in both species studied. The different feeding strategies of the two species likely explain the significant differences in microplastics ingestion between Sabella spallanzanii and Hermodice carunculata, making them potential bioindicators of microplastic pollution impacts on marine biota.
