Can renewable energy portfolio standards and carbon tax policies promote carbon emission reduction in China?s power industry?

Xin Meng et al.

Summary: The carbon emissions from China's power industry are the highest among all sectors. It is crucial to explore a development path for the power industry to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. Renewable portfolio standards (RPS) and carbon tax policy are effective policy instruments for promoting low-carbon transition in the power industry. This study analyzes the impact of multiple policies in electricity markets using an electricity market equilibrium model and a system dynamics (SD) model. The results highlight the negative impact of increasing quota ratio and carbon tax price on thermal power generation, the significance of emission reduction intensity on carbon emissions reduction effectiveness, and the market inefficiency caused by profit maximization strategies adopted by green power firms under multiple policies.

Carbon emission efficiency of thermal power generation in China: Empirical evidence from the micro-perspective of power plants

Tao Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the carbon emission efficiency (CEE) of thermal power generation in China from a micro-perspective. By analyzing data from 42 thermal power plants, the study constructs a multi-dimensional index evaluation system to evaluate CEE. The results show that the distribution of CEE is polarized into two clusters, with higher CEE in Southern China and lower CEE in Central China. The main reasons for low CEE are input redundancies and high carbon emission intensity. The study suggests adjusting resource allocation and input-output structure to improve the sustainable development of power enterprises.

Summary: As the world's largest developing country, China has set ambitious carbon peak and carbon neutrality targets for 2030 and 2060 respectively. With a focus on the power sector, this study utilizes a system dynamics model to simulate carbon emission systems and proposes a three-stage process for achieving carbon neutrality. Through scenario analysis, it is determined that a strategy involving flexible transition of thermal power units and promotion of renewable energy growth is the optimal solution for China to reach carbon neutrality.

Improving carbon emission performance of thermal power plants in China: An environmental benchmark selection approach

Xiaohong Liu et al.

Summary: Power generation in China heavily relies on thermal power plants, which not only consume a large amount of energy but also produce significant environmental pollutants, including CO2. As a result, improving the carbon emission performance of these power plants is crucial for China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. This study introduces an environmental benchmark selection approach and conducts an experiment using production data from thermal power plants in 30 provinces in China in 2019. The findings indicate that while some provinces have shown improvements in carbon emission performance, the overall carbon emission situation in China remains significant. Therefore, energy consumption reduction is necessary in many provinces to enhance carbon emission performance. Policy implications are also discussed.

Regional differences and driving factors analysis of carbon emissions from power sector in China

Xiu Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon emissions from the power sector contribute significantly to global and Chinese carbon emissions, making it a crucial area for emission reduction. This study examines the temporal and spatial differences of carbon emissions from the power sector among provinces in China and identifies the driving factors. The findings suggest that there are significant variations in carbon emissions among provinces, and the effects of different factors on emissions also show temporal and spatial heterogeneity. Recommendations for achieving low-carbon sustainable development in the power sector include improving thermal power efficiency, optimizing power structure by region, and supporting key power-producing provinces.

Measuring the energy production and utilization efficiency of Chinese thermal power industry with the fixed-sum carbon emission constraint

Feng Li et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of the Chinese economy, China has become one of the largest countries in terms of energy consumption and carbon emissions. The Chinese government recently announced its dual carbon policy target, aiming to achieve carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. The thermal power industry, as a crucial energy sector and source of carbon emissions in China, plays a vital role in meeting energy needs and achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality. In this study, a two-stage data envelopment analysis approach is proposed to measure and analyze the energy production-utilization efficiency of the Chinese thermal power industry, considering the fixed-sum carbon emission constraint. The empirical analysis focuses on the provincial level from 2015 to 2019, providing insights into the energy production-utilization efficiency of the thermal power industry in China.
