The Effect of pH Variation in Biogas Production: Impact of Cocoa Pods and Empty Palmyra Palm Bunches

Oumoul-Kairou Karidio Daouda Idrissa et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of pH variation on biogas production and the efficacy of different substrates as stabilizers. The substrates used were banana peels and rumen scraps, and different mixing ratios were studied. Parameters such as pH, biogas production, and methane content were determined. The use of cocoa pods as a stabilizer showed promising results in improving production performance. These findings suggest that cocoa pods could be a potential alternative to chemical stabilizers in anaerobic digestion systems.

Optimal design and operation method of integrated energy system based on stochastic scenario iteration and energy storage attribute evaluation

Haoran Li et al.

Summary: In this study, an optimal design and operation method for integrated energy systems is proposed based on double loop optimization and stochastic scenario iteration. The accuracy and reliability of the design and operation are improved by completing initial parameters and constraints. The proposed methods optimize component capacity and energy attribute in the outer loop and real-time energy dispatch in the inner loop to improve the system's overall performance.

Improvement of biogas production and quality by addition of struvite precipitates derived from liquid anaerobic digestion effluents of palm oil wastes

Pornwimon Wadchasit et al.

Summary: This study focuses on precipitating struvite from liquid anaerobic digestion effluents (LADE) and using it as an additive in palm oil mill effluent (POME) feedstocks for biogas production. The addition of 5% struvite to POME feedstock improved the performance of biogas production, including stability, high COD removal efficiencies, increased methane yields, and decreased H2S concentrations.

Investigating the role of different materials supplementation in anaerobic digestion of kitchen waste: Performance and microbial community dynamics

Fengping Hu et al.

Summary: “This study investigated the performance and microbial community dynamics in an anaerobic digestion system using different materials. The results showed that bentonite with high grease adsorption and alkaline properties improved biogas production and organic removal efficiencies. However, activated carbon and zero-valent iron inhibited biogas production from kitchen waste. Microbial community analysis revealed increased hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis with the addition of an additive. Bentonite increased the composition and diversity of archaea and bacteria, while biochar enriched bacteria capable of electron transfer. These findings provide a research basis for evaluating the influence of exogenous additives on kitchen waste anaerobic digestion.”

Recovering phosphorous from biogas fermentation residues indicates promising economic results

Josef Marousek et al.

Summary: The economics of producing energy-valuable gases through fermenting phytomass is threatened by the costs associated with waste management of highly diluted fermentation residues. The traditional practice of using the solid fraction of the residues for energy purposes leads to nutrient loss and farmers have realized that the organic matter in the residues has little agronomic value. For the first time, it is proposed to activate the charred residues and use the resulting sorbent to capture phosphorus from the liquid fraction, showing promising results for plant nutrition and soil improvement.

Agricultural biogas production: A regional comparison of technical parameters

B. Stuermer et al.

Summary: Renewable energy production has increased in Europe since the 2000s, with biogas plants playing a role in reducing CO2 emissions. However, differences in the numbers and management of biogas plants exist among countries and regions, influenced by legal framework conditions. These conditions impact the structure and technical performance of the biogas sector, as well as the regional and historical influences on plant operation modes. Failure to evolve due to legal constraints may lead to a decline in green power production from biogas plants, affecting renewable energy sources and climate protection targets.
