Response of rice growth and leaf physiology to elevated CO2 concentrations: A meta-analysis of 20-year FACE studies

Shaowu Hu et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis on rice growth physiology showed that elevated CO2 concentration increased root and shoot biomass, maximum tiller number, and light-saturated photosynthetic rate. However, the effects varied with different rice growth stages, cultivars, and nitrogen application rates. Chinese rice showed a more significant response to elevated CO2 compared to Japanese rice in FACE studies.

Effects of free-air temperature increase on grain yield and greenhouse gas emissions in a double rice cropping system

Haiyuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that free-air temperature increase (FATI) does not affect grain yield and CH4 emissions in double rice cropping systems, but stimulates N2O emissions. This could contribute to a positive feedback with future climate warming.

Co-elevation of atmospheric [CO2] and temperature alters photosynthetic capacity and instantaneous water use efficiency in rice cultivars in a cold-temperate region

Chunyu Zhang et al.

Summary: Crop photosynthetic capacity and adaptability to climate change are likely to be constrained. This study examines the dynamics of photosynthetic parameters in three rice cultivars under different treatments. Elevated CO2 significantly increased the photosynthetic rate and yield, while warming had a weaker effect on photosynthesis. The co-elevation of CO2 and temperature decreased stomatal conductance and improved water use efficiency.

Response of rice yield traits to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and its interaction with cultivar, nitrogen application rate and temperature: A meta-analysis of 20 years FACE studies

Shaowu Hu et al.

Summary: The analysis shows that elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration under FACE conditions can significantly increase rice yield by enhancing various yield components, especially spikelet density. Hybrid and indica rice exhibit a stronger response to elevated CO2 compared to conventional rice. Nitrogen supply plays a crucial role in affecting rice yield, while temperature also has different effects on yield increase.

Effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration on growth and photosynthesis in eddo at two different air temperatures

Md Akik Bin Zaher et al.

Summary: Future agricultural management programs should consider the responsiveness of crops to increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperatures. Research on eddo and rice plants showed that elevated CO2 levels had significant effects on the growth and biomass of both crops, with eddo showing a more pronounced increase in biomass under high CO2 concentrations, while rice responded more to high temperatures.

Warm air temperatures increase photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2 concentrations in rice under field conditions

Manman Yuan et al.

Summary: Increasing leaf nitrogen content may not offset the reduction in photosynthetic acclimation under high CO2 concentrations and elevated temperatures in rice. The effects of elevated CO2 and air temperature on chlorophyll and carotenoid content were similar to the changes in total leaf nitrogen content.

30 years of free-air carbon dioxide enrichment (FACE): What have we learned about future crop productivity and its potential for adaptation?

Elizabeth A. Ainsworth et al.

Summary: Research on the effects of elevated CO2 levels on crop yields shows that an increase of around 200 ppm resulted in an 18% increase in yield for C3 crops. However, nitrogen deficiency and warming had negative effects on this increase. Additionally, it was found that C4 crops were not more productive in elevated CO2 levels, except under drought conditions.
