Target of rapamycin signaling couples energy to oxygen sensing to modulate hypoxic gene expression in Arabidopsis br

Alicja B. Kunkowska et al.

Summary: Plants respond to oxygen deprivation by activating a set of hypoxia-responsive genes through a group of transcription factors. However, the activity of these factors is greatly reduced when the plant has limited sugar reserves, suggesting the involvement of another sensing pathway related to energy availability. The energy sensor target of rapamycin (TOR) is responsible for the oxygen sensing in plants, and its inhibition leads to a lower induction of hypoxia-responsive genes.

The Arabidopsis Target of Rapamycin kinase regulates ammonium assimilation and glutamine metabolism

Camille Ingargiola et al.

Summary: In eukaryotes, the target of rapamycin (TOR) kinase plays a crucial role in controlling cell metabolism and growth in response to nutrients and environmental factors. This study focused on investigating TOR in Arabidopsis and its regulation by nitrogen (N) source, as well as the impact of TOR deficiency on N metabolism. The results showed that TOR inhibition globally reduced ammonium uptake and led to the accumulation of amino acids, including glutamine (Gln), and polyamines. Furthermore, the study revealed that TOR inhibition decreased glutamine synthetase activity but increased its enzyme amount, suggesting a connection between TOR pathway and glutamine synthetase-dependent Gln accumulation.

Shade-Induced Leaf Senescence in Plants

Zhuang Li et al.

Summary: Leaf senescence is a crucial developmental process for plants, involving the breakdown of macromolecules to transfer nutrients. It is regulated by various factors, including leaf age, hormones, stress, and light environment. When plants are shaded, changes in light quantity and quality trigger premature leaf senescence. Recent studies have identified components involved in light and hormone signaling pathways that regulate leaf senescence induced by shade. This review provides an overview of the molecular mechanisms controlling shade-induced leaf senescence.

Abiotic stress responses in plants

Huiming Zhang et al.

Summary: Plants face abiotic stresses like drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, which greatly impact their distribution, growth, and crop productivity. Recent research has revealed the complex molecular mechanisms involved in plants' responses to these stresses, including sensing, signaling, transcription, translation, and post-translational modifications. This knowledge can be utilized to enhance crop resilience and sustainability through genetic, chemical, and microbial approaches.

Hydrogen Sulfide Alleviates Manganese Stress in Arabidopsis

Lixia Hou et al.

Summary: This study reveals that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays an important role in alleviating manganese (Mn) stress in Arabidopsis. H2S reduces Mn content, decreases reactive oxygen species accumulation, and enhances antioxidant enzyme activity, thereby mitigating the inhibitory effect of Mn stress on Arabidopsis seedling growth.

A NAC Transcription Factor from 'Sea Rice 86′ Enhances Salt Tolerance by Promoting Hydrogen Sulfide Production in Rice Seedlings

Yan Sun et al.

Summary: This study identifies a rice NAC transcription factor, OsNACL35, which plays a role in improving salt tolerance through enhanced H2S production. OsNACL35 overexpression increases resistance to salt stress and upregulates the expression of a H2S biosynthetic gene, OsDCD1. The findings suggest that OsNACL35 acts as a positive regulator linking H2S production to salt stress tolerance, and may have potential utility in breeding salt-tolerant rice cultivars.

ABA represses TOR and root meristem activity through nuclear exit of the SnRK1 kinase

Borja Belda-Palazon et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) can regulate cell proliferation and root growth by modulating the subcellular localization of SNF1-RELATED KINASE 1 (SnRK1) in Arabidopsis thaliana. Under normal growth conditions, SnRK1 alpha 1 is localized in the nucleus, promoting cell proliferation and meristem size. However, in response to ABA, SnRK1 alpha 1 translocates to the cytoplasm, leading to the inhibition of TOR and reduced cell proliferation and meristem size. This suggests that the subcellular localization of SnRK1 is a crucial mechanism for plants to respond to environmental changes.

Melatonin Mediates Axillary Bud Outgrowth by Improving Nitrogen Assimilation and Transport in Rice

Guo Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the important role of melatonin in the regulation of axillary bud outgrowth in rice plants. Moderate concentrations of melatonin alleviate the inhibition of axillary bud outgrowth caused by high concentrations of basic amino acids. Transcriptome analysis suggests that genes involved in nitrogen metabolism and phytohormone signal transduction pathways are involved in the regulation of axillary bud outgrowth by melatonin.
