The Effect of Different Agrotechnical Treatments on the Establishment of Miscanthus Hybrids in Soil Contaminated with Trace Metals

Jacek Krzyzak et al.

Summary: Climate change and pollution negatively impact Miscanthus plant growth in fields, hindering its potential as a biomass crop on marginal land. The success of establishment depends on hybrid choice, cultivation method, climate, and pollutant concentration. Applying biochar and photodegradable plastic mulch can improve survival rates in polluted soils, but this study found that these treatments did not increase survival or reduce contaminant accumulation over time. For TME-contaminated fields, TV1 hybrid is unsuitable for cultivation, while GNT43 showed higher TME accumulation. Overall, the applied agrotechnology did not effectively address the challenges posed by pollution for Miscanthus establishment and growth.

Satellite spectroscopy reveals the atmospheric consequences of the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war

Chengxin Zhang et al.

Summary: By observing atmospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations, we assess the impact of war on human emission activities, particularly the recent large-scale war between Russia and Ukraine. Our study shows significant decreases in NO2 concentrations in most Ukrainian cities at the beginning of the war, while dramatic increases were observed in Russian cities outside the northern border. The machine learning model suggests that war-induced changes in anthropogenic emissions may account for 40% of the reduction in NO2 pollution for major cities such as Kyiv. Satellites provide a unique perspective on the atmospheric consequences of humanitarian disasters.

Evaluation of Miscanthus x giganteus Tolerance to Trace Element Stress: Field Experiment with Soils Possessing Gradient Cd, Pb, and Zn Concentrations

Giulia Bastia et al.

Summary: Miscanthus x giganteus has shown good potential for phytostabilization by reducing trace element mobility and improving degraded soil quality. However, most of the existing research has been conducted under controlled conditions or with spiked soils, lacking data on the plant's tolerance to increased trace element concentrations in real conditions.

Bioenergy: a foundation to environmental sustainability in a changing global climate scenario

Rauoof Ahmad Rather et al.

Summary: Bioenergy has advantages in terms of renewability and capacity, making it a viable alternative to conventional fossil fuels. Replacing fossil fuels with biofuels can reduce harmful effects and contribute to energy security. However, the impact of bioenergy production can vary depending on biological sources, land locations, and management practices. Identifying suitable crop growing areas and implementing appropriate management practices are crucial for ecological sustainability.

Nematode-based indices in soil ecology: Application, utility, and future directions

Gerhard Du Preez et al.

Summary: The health and functioning of soil ecosystems are vital for sustainable food production and land management. Indices based on nematode community structure are widely used by soil ecologists. This review evaluates the application and future directions of nematode-based indices, providing a framework for selecting indices based on ecological mechanisms for hypothesis testing.

Impact of heavy metals on the environment and human health: Novel therapeutic insights to counter the toxicity

Saikat Mitra et al.

Summary: Heavy metals are toxic pollutants that can accumulate in the human body through bioaccumulation. Recent studies have explored treatment options for heavy metal removal, including nanotechnology-based methods, which offer advantages such as a broad linear range, low detection limits, and high sensitivity.

The Role of Plant Growth Regulators in Miscanthus x giganteus Growth on Trace Elements-Contaminated Soils

Valentina Pidlisnyuk et al.

Summary: The effect of different plant growth regulators on the growth of Miscanthus x giganteus in soils contaminated with trace elements was compared. The results showed that the new PGR Kamethur increased the leaf and stem biomass of Miscanthus x giganteus in heavily contaminated soil, while the conventional Charkor only increased the leaf biomass. Charkor inhibited the stem accumulation of essential elements and potentially toxic elements, while Kamethur increased the accumulation of potentially toxic elements.

Phytoremediation potential of Miscanthus sinensis And. in organochlorine pesticides contaminated soil amended by Tween 20 and Activated carbon

Aigerim Mamirova et al.

Summary: Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are a concern due to their persistence and toxicity in the environment. Phytoremediation techniques, such as using plant amendments, can improve the growth parameters of plants and speed up the remediation process.

Contrasting impacts of mobilisation and immobilisation amendments on soil health and heavy metal transfer to food chain

Jingtao Wu et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of mobilisation and immobilisation additives on soil health, microbial communities, and metal transfer in the soil-plant-insect system. Mobilisation additives inhibited plant growth, while immobilisation additives promoted plant growth and improved soil health. Organic immobilisation amendments were most effective in reducing metal transfer and improving soil health.
