Bacterial volatile organic compounds as biopesticides, growth promoters and plant-defense elicitors: Current understanding and future scope

Annu Rani et al.

Summary: Bacteria release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the environment, which have various effects on plants, including promoting growth, suppressing pathogens, and acting as signaling molecules. Some VOCs also exhibit antimicrobial and pesticidal activities. Different bacterial species produce different VOCs, with some contributing to plant growth promotion. Understanding the mechanisms by which VOCs affect plant genes and metabolic pathways is still a topic of ongoing research.

In vitro and in silico studies of salicylic acid on systemic induced resistance against bacterial leaf blight disease and enhancement of crop yield

Wannaporn Thepbandit et al.

Summary: This study found that salicylic acid treatment can enhance plant defenses and growth in rice. The severity of bacterial leaf blight disease in rice was reduced by 71% after salicylic acid treatment. Salicylic acid treatment also induced the production of hydrogen peroxide and increased antioxidant content in rice leaf tissues. Additionally, salicylic acid treatment significantly increased chlorophyll content in rice and promoted growth.

The Bacterial Degradation of Lignin-A Review

Dijana Grgas et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the role of bacteria in lignin degradation and highlights the importance of bacterial enzymes in this process. Bioinformatics analysis has revealed a high proportion of lignin-degrading genes in actinobacteria and proteobacteria classes, suggesting the presence of undiscovered pathways and enzymes. Bacteria capable of lignin modification and degradation have been found in various environments, including plants, soil, wood, and the gut. Bacterial strains such as Bacillus, Rhodococcus, Streptomyces, and Pseudomonas have been reported to have lignin decomposition ability. The review aims to provide insights into bacterial species and enzymes involved in lignin degradation, as well as the current state of lignin degradation in the pulp and paper manufacturing industry.

Bacillus vallismortis TU-Orga21 blocks rice blast through both direct effect and stimulation of plant defense

Wannaporn Thepbandit et al.

Summary: Different microorganisms isolated from the rhizosphere of Oryza sativa were studied for their direct and indirect modes of action in order to inhibit Magnaporthe oryzae, the causal agent of rice blast. Bacillus vallismortis strain TU-Orga21 was found to significantly reduce the growth of M. oryzae and deform its hyphal structures. Treatment with a biosurfactant derived from B. vallismortis also led to the accumulation of plant defense compounds and mitigated the severity of rice blast disease.

Salicylic Acid and Mobile Regulators of Systemic Immunity in Plants: Transport and Metabolism

Tae-Jin Kim et al.

Summary: Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is activated when infected leaves produce SAR-inducing signals that are transported to uninfected parts and activate systemic immunity. The transport routes of many SAR-associated chemicals are still unknown. Recent studies suggest that pathogen-infected cells preferentially transport salicylic acid (SA) through the apoplast, while glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) and azelaic acid (AzA) travel through the plasmodesmata (PD) channel. This review discusses the role of SA as a mobile signal and the regulation of SA transport in SAR.

Nano-chitosan encapsulated Pseudomonas fluorescens greatly reduces Fusarium wilt infection in tomato

Ahmed Mohamed Nabil Abdelraouf et al.

Summary: The synergistic effect of using nanochitosan to deliver Pseudomonas fluorescens on its stability in the soil and induction resistance against fusarium wilt in tomato plants was investigated. The results showed that the nano-Pf treatment resulted in the highest growth and disease reduction percentage. Additionally, the treatment enhanced the defense enzyme activity in tomato plants and effectively mitigated Fusarium wilt infection.

Characterization and Assessment of 2, 4-Diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG)-Producing Pseudomonas fluorescens VSMKU3054 for the Management of Tomato Bacterial Wilt Caused by Ralstonia solanacearum

Perumal Suresh et al.

Summary: Microbial bio-products, such as 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens, have potential as an alternative to chemical pesticides for managing crop diseases. In this study, the inhibitory efficacy of DAPG against Ralstonia solanacearum was assessed. The study also revealed the beneficial characteristics of Pseudomonas fluorescens, such as the production of antimicrobial substances and the ability to solubilize phosphate. Additionally, the application of Pseudomonas fluorescens and DAPG reduced bacterial wilt incidence and promoted the growth of tomato seedlings.

Evaluating land application of pulp and paper mill sludge: A review

Tomi Turner et al.

Summary: Over 400 million tonnes of board and paper are produced globally each year, generating 4.3-40 kg of sludge-like material, known as pulp and paper mill sludge (PPMS), per tonne of product. PPMS, with its high organic content and low toxicity, is being increasingly used as a soil amendment in agriculture. This review explores the benefits, potential impacts, and viability of land spreading PPMS, suggesting that risks can be mitigated and that the practice is environmentally responsible. However, further research is needed to assess long-term implications and the presence of emerging contaminants.

Volatile organic compounds produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens ZX as potential biological fumigants against gray mold on postharvest grapes

Tao Zhong et al.

Summary: The study found that volatile organic compounds produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens ZX have the potential to control gray mold on grapes caused by Botrytis cinerea. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed the biocontrol efficacy of these VOCs, and selected chemical substances were shown to inhibit the growth of B. cinerea effectively. SEM analysis demonstrated that the VOCs could affect the morphological and structural characteristics of the fungus, indicating their promising potential for biocontrol.

Antifungal activity of volatile organic compounds produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens ZX and potential biocontrol of blue mold decay on postharvest citrus

Zhirong Wang et al.

Summary: The research demonstrated that VOCs produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens ZX have a significant inhibitory effect on blue mold disease caused by Penicillium italicum in postharvest citrus fruits, by inhibiting mycelial growth and conidial germination of the pathogen. Organic acids and sulfur compounds were identified as the key active components of VOCs, with dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) showing the highest antifungal activity.
