A new estimation of carbon emissions from land use and land cover change in China over the past 300 years

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: Scientific estimation of carbon emissions induced by historical land use and land cover change is important in improving carbon budget estimates and understanding the future carbon-sink potential. This study re-estimates China's carbon emissions for 1700-1980 using updated data and a bookkeeping model, revealing the significant changes caused by land use and cover change.

Terrestrial carbon sinks in China and around the world and their contribution to carbon neutrality

Yuanhe Yang et al.

Summary: Enhancing the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink is crucial for slowing down the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration and achieving carbon neutrality. This review summarizes the progress in terrestrial C budget researches, clarifies spatial patterns and drivers of terrestrial C sources and sinks, and examines the role of terrestrial C sinks in achieving carbon neutrality.

Effects of land use and land cover change on soil organic carbon storage in the Hexi regions, Northwest China

Yongge Li et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of land use and land cover change (LUCC) on soil organic carbon (SOC) storage in arid inland regions, finding that SOC distribution varies across different regions and LUCC plays a significant role in influencing SOC storage. SOC storage changes in the Qilian Mountains and Hexi Corridor are primarily driven by different LUCC factors, with climate change and cropland expansion being key drivers for enhancing SOC storage in the respective regions.

New land-use-change emissions indicate a declining CO2 airborne fraction

Margreet J. E. van Marle et al.

Summary: This article indirectly estimates the efficiency of land and ocean carbon sinks by analyzing the trends in the atmospheric ratio and provides evidence that the carbon uptake by land and ocean is keeping pace with anthropogenic emissions. It also shows that tropical deforestation emissions have increased significantly and contribute to the decrease in the CO2 airborne fraction.

Effects of land use and cover change (LUCC) on terrestrial carbon stocks in China between 2000 and 2018

Xiaoqing Chang et al.

Summary: Land-use and cover change (LUCC) is a significant factor in the terrestrial carbon cycle, but the changes in vegetation biomass and soil carbon sequestration caused by land-use conversion have large uncertainties. In this study, we determined the characteristics of LUCC in China by analyzing transition matrices and transfer trajectories. By integrating models, we explored the carbon budget from land-use conversion and found that LUCC has a significant effect on increasing the terrestrial carbon pool in China. Our findings have implications for improving the estimation accuracy of carbon pools and understanding the impact of human activities on the regional carbon balance in China's terrestrial ecosystem.

Animal Activities of the Key Herbivore Plateau Pika (Ochotona curzoniae) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Affect Grassland Microbial Networks and Ecosystem Functions

Jiawei Yang et al.

Summary: The disturbance caused by plateaus pikas has impacts on soil microbial communities and ecosystem multifunctionality, especially the combined disturbance with grazing. Bacterial, fungal, and archaeal communities respond differently to the disturbance, with bacterial and fungal networks being less stable. High-intensity pika disturbance significantly reduces ecosystem multifunctionality.

Land use/land cover change and its impact on ecosystem carbon storage in coastal areas of China from 1980 to 2050

Liya Zhu et al.

Summary: Land use/land cover (LULC) change has a significant impact on ecosystem carbon storage and global climate change. This study used CA-Markov and InVEST models to evaluate LULC change and its impact on ecosystem carbon storage in coastal areas of China. The results showed a downward trend in carbon storage due to changes in LULC types, with different patterns observed spatially and temporally.

Future Land Use/Land Cover Change Has Nontrivial and Potentially Dominant Impact on Global Gross Primary Productivity

Haiyan Hou et al.

Summary: The anthropogenic land use/land cover change significantly affects terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) and leads to a decline in global terrestrial GPP in the 21st century. The contribution of LULC changes to GPP dynamics varies across different time periods and regions, but becomes trivial when the CO2 fertilization effect is incorporated into the model.

Global Carbon Budget 2022

Pierre Friedlingstein et al.

Summary: Accurately assessing anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions is crucial for understanding the global carbon cycle, developing climate policies, and predicting climate change. This article describes the methodologies and data used to quantify the components of the global carbon budget and their uncertainties. The data for 2021 shows an increase in fossil fuel and land-use change emissions, as well as the impacts of the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial biosphere on carbon absorption.

Global and regional drivers of land-use emissions in 1961-2017

Chaopeng Hong et al.

Summary: Historically, human uses of land have significantly impacted ecosystems, biodiversity, and the atmosphere through greenhouse gas emissions. Despite global efforts to mitigate emissions, land-use emissions have continued to rise, driven by factors such as population growth, agricultural production, and land-use changes. Regional disparities in emissions intensity and the disproportionate impact of certain products, such as beef, emphasize the need for targeted mitigation strategies. Our findings provide insights into the complex drivers of global land-use emissions, offering valuable information for future conservation and sustainability efforts.
