A pilot survey of selenium status and its geospatial variation among children and women in three rural districts of Zimbabwe

Beaula Mutonhodza et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence and geospatial patterns of selenium deficiency among children and women in rural Zimbabwe. The results showed high and widespread selenium deficiency among women and children in the three districts, indicating the need for a nationwide survey to explore the extent and spatial distribution of selenium deficiency.

Soil and landscape factors influence geospatial variation in maize grain zinc concentration in Malawi

L. Botoman et al.

Summary: This study reveals the spatial variation in maize grain zinc concentration in Malawi, which can be influenced by soil properties and environmental factors. The study also identifies soil pH, isotopically exchangeable zinc (Zn-E), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extractable zinc (Zn-DTPA), and mean annual temperature as predictors of maize grain zinc concentration.

Fighting Obesity-Related Micronutrient Deficiencies through Biofortification of Agri-Food Crops with Sustainable Fertilization Practices

Carlos Esteban Guardiola-Marquez et al.

Summary: Obesity is associated with micronutrient deficiencies and the poor quality of food produced by the current agricultural system. To address this issue, modern agriculture is adopting new biofortification technologies, such as biofertilizers and nanofertilizers.

Agronomic biofortification increases grain zinc concentration of maize grown under contrasting soil types in Malawi

Lester Botoman et al.

Summary: Agronomic biofortification can increase the zinc concentration in maize grain and improve its nutritional value. The study shows that proper application of zinc-enriched fertilizers can increase maize yield and zinc concentration, enhancing the quality of staple crops.

Sorghum yield response to NPKS and NPZn nutrients along sorghum-growing landscapes

Gizaw Desta et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of grain sorghum to nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, and zinc fertilizers, as well as the influence of different landscape positions on fertilizer response and yield variability. The results showed that the response to fertilizer application differed across landscape positions, with foot slopes exhibiting the highest response. Additionally, the combined application of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, landscape position, and the interaction between fertilizer application and landscape positions significantly affected sorghum yield.

Plant Available Zinc Is Influenced by Landscape Position in the Amhara Region, Ethiopia

Mesfin K. Desta et al.

Summary: This study characterized the plant available zinc at different landscape positions by conducting adsorption-desorption studies on soil samples collected from on-farm trials in Ethiopia. The amount of adsorption and desorption was found to be highly associated with soil pH, organic carbon concentration, and cation exchange capacity, with Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models fitting well to the data. Multiple regression models were developed to inform zinc fertilizer management strategies for improving plant zinc use efficiency in different locations and landscape positions in the region.

The nutritional quality of cereals varies geospatially in Ethiopia and Malawi

D. Gashu et al.

Summary: Micronutrient deficiencies are widespread among people in sub-Saharan Africa due to limited access to micronutrient-rich food sources. Research in Ethiopia and Malawi shows geographical variation in the micronutrient composition of staple cereal grains, influenced by soil and environmental factors. Understanding these geographical effects is crucial for designing interventions to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies.

Using 77Se-Labelled Foliar Fertilisers to Determine How Se Transfers Within Wheat Over Time

Chandnee Ramkissoon et al.

Summary: Foliar selenium fertilisation has been shown to be more efficient than soil-applied fertilisation for increasing selenium concentration in wheat grains. Urea inclusion in foliar Se solutions can enhance selenium absorption in early growth stages, while also improving the conversion of inorganic selenium into bioavailable selenomethionine in later growth stages, leading to rapid translocation to the grain. The optimization of selenium fertiliser formulation, method, and timing of application is crucial for refining biofortification programs in different climatic regimes.

Application of Zinc and Iron-Based Fertilizers Improves the Growth Attributes, Productivity, and Grain Quality of Two Wheat (Triticum aestivum) Cultivars

Muhammad Bilal Hafeez et al.

Summary: Field-based experiments were conducted to minimize the impact of hidden hunger through agronomic biofortification of two wheat cultivars with zinc and iron. The study showed that the combined application of zinc and iron improved growth attributes, productivity, and quality of wheat, resulting in grains with higher zinc, iron, calcium, and starch contents, as well as lower gluten concentrations, leading to maximum productivity of bread wheat cultivars.

Good soil management can reduce dietary zinc deficiency in Zimbabwe

Muneta G. Manzeke-Kangara et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of different soil fertility management options to reduce dietary zinc deficiency in maize crops in Zimbabwe. Universal adoption of optimal fertilizers, including soil zinc applications and locally available organic leaf litter, is estimated to significantly reduce the prevalence of dietary zinc deficiency and improve human health.
