Metabolomics based on GC-MS revealed hub metabolites of pecan seeds germinating at different temperatures

Tingting Xue et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that the germination rate and water content of pecan seeds were highest at 30 degrees C. The radicle of pecan seeds could sense seed coat cracking. Amino acids and carbohydrates play important roles in pecan seed germination. This study provides valuable information for further research on pecan seedling establishment.

Plant responses to climate change: metabolic changes under combined abiotic stresses

Sara Zandalinas et al.

Summary: Climate change is expected to increase the occurrence and severity of abiotic stress combinations, posing a significant threat to plant growth and crop yield. Plants can respond to these combinations by activating specific physiological and molecular responses, as well as adjusting metabolic pathways to mitigate the negative effects. This review examines recent studies on the metabolic changes in plants under stress combinations and suggests using metabolites as breeding targets to develop stress-tolerant crops.

How plants solubilise seed fats: revisiting oleosin structure and function to inform commercial applications

Amanda J. Board et al.

Summary: Plants store triacylglycerides in oil bodies and use oleosins to form and mobilize these energy sources during germination. However, our knowledge of oleosin structure and function is limited, which hinders our ability to engineer them for various applications.

Legume Proteins and Peptides as Compounds in Nutraceuticals: A Structural Basis for Dietary Health Effects

Marina Carbonaro et al.

Summary: The quality of legume crops has significant economic and health impact. Legume proteins and peptides have been found to possess anticarcinogenic, hypocholesterolemic, glucose-lowering, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and immunostimulant properties. Understanding the relationship between the structure and bioavailability of legume proteins and peptides is crucial for the development of their nutraceutical potential.

ABI transcription factors and PROTEIN L-ISOASPARTYL METHYLTRANSFERASE module mediate seed desiccation tolerance and longevity in Oryza sativa

Nitin Uttam Kamble et al.

Summary: PIMT plays a key role in the desiccation tolerance of orthodox seeds but not in recalcitrant seeds. The reduced PIMT activity and increased isoAsp accumulation in recalcitrant seeds result in desiccation intolerance. PIMT interacts with ABI transcription factors and repairs isoAsp residues.

Deterioration in the Quality of Recalcitrant Quercus robur Seeds during Six Months of Storage at Subzero Temperatures: Ineffective Activation of Prosurvival Mechanisms and Evidence of Freezing Stress from an Untargeted Metabolomic Study

Agnieszka Szuba et al.

Summary: Pedunculate oak is an economically important forest-forming species in Poland, but its seeds are sensitive to desiccation. Due to the scarcity of good-quality seeds caused by the tree's irregular seed production, a new protocol for longer acorn storage at lower temperatures is needed. Storage at -7 degrees C for six months resulted in a significant decrease in seed germination potential, which was accompanied by an increase in certain metabolites.

The Effects of Temperature and Water on the Seed Germination and Seedling Development of Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)

Asma Haj Sghaier et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different temperature and water conditions on rapeseed seed germination and seedling growth. The findings showed that 20 degrees Celsius was the optimum temperature for seeds, water availability played a significant role in germination, and seed quantity and priming method had an impact on seedling growth.

Seed storage behavior of Musa balbisiana Colla, a wild progenitor of bananas and plantains - Implications for ex situ germplasm conservation

Shivani Singh et al.

Summary: The seeds of Musa balbisiana exhibit 'orthodox' storage behavior, with the potential for short-term conservation at 25 degrees C, medium-term conservation at -20 degrees C, and long-term conservation at -196 degrees C. Different moisture and temperature conditions affect the storage and regeneration potential of the seeds, highlighting the importance of suitable conservation strategies for long-term protection and utilization of this genetic resource.

Effect of oven and sun drying on the chemical properties, lipid profile of soursop (Annona muricata) seed oil, and the functional properties of the defatted flour

Bernard Tiencheu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the chemical properties of soursop seed oils were influenced by the drying technique and time used. The predominant fatty acids in the oils were C18:1n-9, C18:2n-6, and C16:0, with unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and omega-fats not significantly affected by oven drying time. The oils had acceptable PUFA/SFA ratios [1.14-1.37] as well as Atherogenic index (AI) [0.25-0.27] according to FAO/WHO recommendations.
