Biopreservative Effect of the Tunisian Halophyte Lobularia maritima Flavonoid Fraction, Used Alone and in Combination with Linalool in Stored Minced Beef Meat

Summary: In this study, Lobularia maritima flavonoid extract (LmFV) was characterized and found to contain five compounds. GC-MS analyses showed the presence of various components in LmFV, including sugar alcohols, sugars, fatty acids, and terpenes. The antibacterial and antioxidant activities of LmFV and linalool (Lin) were evaluated, and the biopreservative effect of LmFV alone and in combination with Lin on minced beef was tested. The combination of LmFV and Lin exhibited stronger antimicrobial properties and extended the shelf life of the product by about 10 days.

GASA Proteins: Review of Their Functions in Plant Environmental Stress Tolerance

Summary: The Gibberellic acid-stimulated Arabidopsis (GASA) gene family is a class of functional cysteine-rich proteins that play important roles in plant hormone signal transmission, development and growth regulation, and response to different environmental constraints. This review provides an overview of the diversity, structure, and subcellular localization of GASA proteins, as well as their involvement in hormone crosstalk, redox regulation, and plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. Understanding the complex regulation of GASA proteins can contribute to the development of transgenic plants and the improvement of abiotic stress tolerance in agriculture.

Food safety knowledge among 7th-grade middle school students: A report of a Brazilian municipal school using workshop-based educational strategies

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge of 7th-grade students regarding food microbiology and safety, and to apply workshop-based educational strategies. The workshops included educational games, laboratory practices, videos, and lectures. The middle rank of the post-intervention questionnaire was 21% higher than the pre-intervention questionnaire, indicating that practical approaches to food safety positively influenced learning.

Microbiological quality assessment of fresh produce: Potential health risk to children and urgent need for improved food safety in school feeding schemes

Salvia officinalis L. and Salvia sclarea Essential Oils: Chemical Composition, Biological Activities and Preservative Effects against Listeria monocytogenes Inoculated into Minced Beef Meat

Summary: In this study, the chemical composition of Salvia officinalis L. and Salvia sclarea essential oils (EOs) was analyzed using GC-MS. The EOs showed rich terpene metabolites, with significant differences in composition. The EOs demonstrated antimicrobial and antiradical activity, and their combination showed complete inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes in ground beef during cold storage. These findings suggest that both EOs can be used as safe and natural preservatives in various food and pharmaceutical products.
