Biological Control and Mitigation of Aflatoxin Contamination in Commodities

Ferenc Peles et al.

Summary: This article reviews different control methods for aflatoxins, including biological control by bacteria, yeasts, and fungi, pre-harvest biocontrol technologies, and post-harvest technologies based on biological agents. These methods can help us reduce aflatoxin contamination in feed and food.

Reduction of aflatoxin B1 by magnetic graphene oxide/TiO2 nanocomposite and its effect on quality of corn oil

Shumin Sun et al.

Summary: The study synthesized a magnetic graphene oxide/TiO2 nanocomposite for reducing aflatoxin B-1 in corn oil, with a high reduction rate of 96.4% under UV-Vis light after 120 min illumination. The photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite was enhanced under both UV and visible light, with holes and hydroxyl radicals playing key roles in AFB(1) reduction. The quality of the treated corn oil remained acceptable after 180 days, demonstrating an effective and environmentally friendly approach for reducing AFB(1) in oil products.

Application of yeasts and yeast derivatives for the biological control of toxigenic fungi and their toxic metabolites

Zahoor Ul Hassan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that yeasts, particularly Saccharomyces cerevisiae, can effectively inhibit fungal growth, reduce mycotoxin synthesis, and remove mycotoxins from food. Non-fermenting yeasts show significant inhibitory effects on A. flavus growth and aflatoxin synthesis, while Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains exhibit high binding activities against various mycotoxins. Additionally, all yeast cell walls significantly reduce aflatoxin M1 in contaminated milk.
