Probiotic supplementation attenuates age-related sarcopenia via the gut-muscle axis in SAMP8 mice

Li-Han Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that supplementation with Lactobacillus casei Shirota can alleviate age-related declines in muscle mass, strength, and mitochondrial function, prevent inflammation, and oxidative stress, as well as modulate the gut microbiota composition and predicted bacterial functions. These results suggest that LcS may represent a promising strategy for mitigating age-related muscle impairments through the gut-muscle axis.

A multistrain probiotic improves handgrip strength and functional capacity in patients with COPD: A randomized controlled trial

Asima Karim et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of probiotics on sarcopenia and physical capacity in COPD patients. The results showed that probiotic treatment can reduce intestinal permeability, stabilize neuromuscular junction, and improve muscle strength and functional performance. In addition, probiotics treatment also decreased plasma levels of markers of systemic inflammation and oxidative stress. However, probiotics treatment did not significantly reduce the prevalence of sarcopenia.

Gut microbiota composition influences outcomes of skeletal muscle nutritional intervention via blended protein supplementation in posttransplant patients with hematological malignancies

Guangxu Ren et al.

Summary: This study found that soy-whey blended protein can significantly improve muscle status in leukemia patients. The diversity and composition of intestinal microbiota play important roles in regulating muscle metabolism, with specific bacterial taxa and metabolic pathways identified as key factors influencing muscle outcomes after nutritional intervention.

The molecular mechanisms of probiotic strains in improving ageing bone and muscle ofd-galactose-induced ageing rats

Y. -Y. Hor et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the molecular mechanisms of Lactobacillus strains in improving ageing of the musculoskeletal system, with L. fermentum DR9 showing the strongest modulation effect. The protective effects of the bacteria on muscle and bone through antioxidative and anti-inflammatory actions were demonstrated, suggesting L. fermentum DR9 as a promising targeted anti-ageing therapy.

Association of circulating C-reactive protein and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein with components of sarcopenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies

Nafiseh Shokri-mashhadi et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis investigated the association between serum inflammatory markers, CRP and hs-CRP, with muscle strength, muscle mass, and muscle function. The results showed a significant inverse correlation between CRP and hs-CRP concentrations with muscle strength, highlighting the importance of future cohort studies to clarify the causal correlation between inflammatory biomarkers and sarcopenia components.

Understanding the gut microbiota and sarcopenia: a systematic review

Chaoran Liu et al.

Summary: This systematic review analyzed the evidence on the effects of gut microbiota on muscle/sarcopenia, showing that altering the gut microbiota can directly affect muscle phenotypes. Probiotics, prebiotics, short-chain fatty acids, and bacterial products are potential novel therapies to enhance muscle mass and physical performance. The potential mechanisms of microbiome modulating muscle include protein, energy, lipid, and glucose metabolism, inflammation level, neuromuscular junction, and mitochondrial function.
