Transformer-Based Deep Neural Language Modeling for Construct-Specific Automatic Item Generation

Bjoern E. Hommel et al.

Summary: Algorithmic automatic item generation has been used to obtain cognitive items in knowledge and aptitude testing, with recent progress made in creating items for non-cognitive constructs using recurrent neural networks. The study proposes fine-tuning pre-trained causal transformer models for construct-specific item generation and compares the validity of human- and machine-authored items using empirical data. Results show that deep neural networks can effectively generate non-cognitive items with good psychometric properties.

Smart Contracts in the Construction Industry: A Systematic Review

Ishara Rathnayake et al.

Summary: The use of Smart Contracts (SCs) in the construction industry is still in its early stages, but has potential to improve project delivery efficiency and establish a reliable payment environment. Research in this area is mainly focused in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in China, with more empirical articles than theoretical studies. Key drivers for adoption include supply chain pressure and competitive pressure, while barriers include insecurity and incompatibility. Strategies to enhance the application of SCs in construction include theorem proving, selective transparency methods, integration testing with other systems, and semi-automated consensus mechanisms.

A Digitalized Design Risk Analysis Tool with Machine-Learning Algorithm for EPC Contractor's Technical Specifications Assessment on Bidding

Min-Ji Park et al.

Summary: Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects involve the entire lifecycle of industrial plants. Most EPC contractors lack systematic decision-making tools during bidding, leading to potential underestimation of technical risks and subsequent cost overruns or delays. The development of digital modules for technical risk extraction and design parameter extraction can significantly reduce project risks through automated analysis and extraction of risk clauses in technical specifications.

Control Focus in Standard Forms: An Assessment through Text Mining and NLP

Ajay Kumar Agrawal et al.

Summary: Construction projects are prone to disputes due to parties failing to fulfill contractual obligations. The study found that international standard contract forms tend to focus less on control compared to their Indian counterparts, and most forms have evolved to be more control-focused over time. The findings aim to enhance the quality of drafting standard forms to reduce the risk of costly arbitrations and litigations.
