Description of Sarcocystis platyrhynchosi n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) from domestic ducks Anas platyrhynchos (Anseriformes: Anatidae) in China

Junjie Hu et al.

Summary: A new species, Sarcocystis platyrhynchosi, was discovered in domestic ducks in China. This is the first record of Sarcocystis spp. from waterfowl in China. Further studies using additional molecular markers are needed to clarify the relationships among these species.

Molecular Identification of Sarcocystis rileyi and Sarcocystis sp. (Closely Related to Sarcocystis wenzeli) in Intestines of Mustelids from Lithuania

Petras Prakas et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of predatory mammals of the family Mustelidae in the transmission of avian Sarcocystis spp. using molecular methods. The results showed the presence of S. rileyi and Sarcocystis sp. in the small intestine samples of mustelids. This is the first report of avian Sarcocystis identified by molecular methods in mustelids' intestines, highlighting the significance of these small predators for the spreading of Sarcocystis spp. using birds as intermediate hosts.

Molecular Confirmation of Accipiter Birds of Prey as Definitive Hosts of Numerous Sarcocystis Species, including Sarcocystis sp., Closely Related to Pathogenic S. calchasi

Tautvile Sukyte et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify Sarcocystis species in intestinal scrapings of Northern Goshawks and Eurasian Sparrowhawks in Lithuania. Sarcocystis calchasi, a protozoan parasite causing respiratory and neurological diseases in birds, was detected for the first time in Lithuania. Different Sarcocystis species were identified, and the prevalence and species richness were higher in Northern Goshawks compared to Eurasian Sparrowhawks. This study provides important insights into the distribution and diversity of Sarcocystis species in avian hosts.

Molecular screening for Sarcocystidae in muscles of wild birds from Brazil suggests a plethora of intermediate hosts for Sarcocystis falcatula

Horwald A. B. Llano et al.

Summary: This study represents the first extensive survey of Sarcocystidae species in wild birds in Brazil. It provides molecular evidence of natural infection of S. falcatula in 14 species, including in the order Piciformes, and demonstrates high genetic diversity of S. falcatula in intermediate hosts in South America. Additionally, this study presents evidence of at least three non-described species of Sarcocystis.

Molecular characterization of Sarcocystis spp. in seabirds from southern Brazil

Ana Paula Sato et al.

Summary: The study revealed multiple Sarcocystis spp. infections in seabirds from the coastline of Santa Catarina State in Brazil. Some of the sarcocysts were found in both pectoral and cardiac muscles of the birds. Two distinct types of sarcocysts were observed morphologically.

Summary: This study discovered a new species of Sarcocystis in a musophagiform bird for the first time worldwide. The new species, S. cristata sp. nov., is genetically distinct. Phylogenetic analyses can help in predicting potential definitive hosts for the new Sarcocystis species.

From 18S to 28S rRNA Gene: An Improved Targeted Sarcocystidae PCR Amplification, Species Identification with Long DNA Sequences

Florence C. H. Lee et al.

Summary: To address the need for better Sarcocystis species detection, a study improved PCR amplification by using a new primer pair spanning from the 18S to 28S rRNA genes. Analysis revealed that the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and 28S genes may be more effective in indicating nucleotide variations than the 18S gene, enhancing species identification potential. This highlights the importance of reporting DNA sequences from the 18S to the 28S rRNA genes, especially in emerging pathogens, rather than limiting to a single gene.

Sarcocystis rileyi (Apicomplexa) in Anas platyrhynchos in Europe with a potential for spread

Shaozhi Zuo et al.

Summary: Through morphometric and molecular diagnosis of parasites recovered from four mallards shot by local hunters along the eastern coastline of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, the causative pathogen was identified as Sarcocystis rileyi. The study recorded elongate cysts and large numbers of bradyzoites in the musculature of the birds, as well as the migration of a mallard from Sweden to the island. Recent cases suggest potential geographic spread of the parasite species, calling for survey programs in Europe to monitor and prevent further colonization of duck populations.
