The European Union Summary Report on Antimicrobial Resistance in zoonotic and indicator bacteria from humans, animals and food in 2020/2021

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data on zoonotic and indicator bacteria from humans, animals and food are collected annually by the EU Member States (MSs) and reporting countries, jointly analysed by EFSA and ECDC and presented in a yearly EU Summary Report. This report provides an overview of the main findings of the 2020-2021 harmonised AMR monitoring in Salmonella spp., Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli in humans and food-producing animals (broilers, laying hens and turkeys, fattening pigs and bovines under 1 year of age) and relevant meat thereof. In 2021, MSs submitted for the first time AMR data on E. coli isolates from meat sampled at border control posts.

Effect of an antimicrobial stewardship intervention on the prescribing behaviours of companion animal veterinarians: A pre-post study

Ben Walker et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of a formal discussion of antimicrobial stewardship for dogs and cats on systemic antimicrobial prescribing behaviors among companion animal veterinarians. Results suggest that discussion is more likely to influence antimicrobial choice rather than prescribing frequency, with interventions benefiting from focusing on appropriate antimicrobial selection.

Antimicrobial Use in Companion Animals: Assessing Veterinarians' Prescription Patterns through the First National Survey in Chile

Nicolas Galarce et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance is a major global health issue driven by the misuse of antimicrobials by animal and health workers. This study aimed to describe the antimicrobial prescription patterns of Chilean companion animal veterinarians through a nationally distributed survey. The results showed that critically important or highly important drugs were frequently used without the use of confirmatory laboratory tests, highlighting a risk to animal and public health.

Prescription Pattern of Antimicrobial Use in Small Animal Veterinary Practice in Cameroon.

Mohamed Moctar Mouliom Mouiche et al.

Summary: This study collected retrospective data on antimicrobial use in pets in Cameroon from January 2012 to December 2015, analyzing prescribing patterns and factors influencing prescription practices. Sulfamethoxypyridazine-trimethoprim, benzylpenicillin-streptomycin, and marbofloxacin were the most commonly prescribed antimicrobials. Antimicrobials were mainly used for gastrointestinal and skin diseases in dogs, and for surgical problems, musculoskeletal disease, and gastrointestinal tract diseases in cats.

Claudia Chirollo et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the consumption of antimicrobials before and after the mandatory use of VEP at the Italian University Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Naples, showing that after VEP implementation, antibiotic usage aligned more closely with recommendations, helping to limit improper use of antibiotics and spread of multidrug-resistant pathogens.

Overview and Evaluation of Existing Guidelines for Rational Antimicrobial Use in Small-Animal Veterinary Practice in Europe

Fergus Allerton et al.

Summary: This study aimed to map and qualitatively assess antimicrobial stewardship guidelines for cats and dogs in Europe, highlighting the lack of national guidelines in several countries and identifying key principles for guidance development. The AGREE II analysis revealed methodological limitations of current guidelines, emphasizing the need for a structured approach to improve antimicrobial stewardship in the future.
