Genetic Markers Associated with Milk Production and Thermotolerance in Holstein Dairy Cows Managed in a Heat-Stressed Environment

Ricardo Zamorano-Algandar et al.

Summary: In a semiarid environment, dairy production in Holstein cows is challenging due to heat stress. Genetic selection for heat tolerance, specifically SNPs in genes such as TLR4, GRM8, and SMAD3, appears to be a useful strategy to improve milk performance. This study validated the association of these SNPs with milk yield, rectal temperature, and respiratory rate in lactating Holstein cows managed in a hot and humid environment.

Multi-Thoracolumbar Variations and NR6A1 Gene Polymorphisms Potentially Associated with Body Size and Carcass Traits of Dezhou Donkey

Ziwen Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that there is variation in the number of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae in Dezhou donkeys, and genetic variations in the NR6A1 gene may play an important role in regulating the development of thoracolumbar vertebrae. By analyzing the relationship between seven single nucleotide variants (SNVs) in the NR6A1 gene and body size traits and carcass traits of Dezhou donkey, it was found that different loci are associated with different traits, and the mutation effect is not completely consistent. Furthermore, the study found that seven SNVs in the NR6A1 gene are significantly associated with the TLN, body size, and carcass traits of Dezhou donkey. These findings are important for the study of thoracolumbar vertebrae in Dezhou donkeys and for marker assisted selection in donkey breeding programs.

The genomic history and global expansion of domestic donkeys

Evelyn T. Todd et al.

Summary: Donkeys have played an essential role in human history as beasts of burden, particularly in semi-arid and upland environments. Despite their global significance and support to low- to middle-income communities, they have been insufficiently studied. Through genome analysis, this study reveals the domestication history of donkeys, with a single domestication event in Africa around 5000 BCE. The study also uncovers a previously unknown genetic lineage in the Levant that contributed to increasing ancestry toward Asia. The management of donkeys involved inbreeding and the production of giant bloodlines during the Roman era when mules were of great importance to the economy and military.
