Influence of precision livestock farming on the environmental performance of intensive dairy goat farms

Guillermo Pardo et al.

Summary: The implementation of Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) can reduce the environmental impact of livestock production. This study analyzed the environmental impact of intensive dairy goat production and explored the influence of adopting a smart-farming PLF platform on environmental performance. Results showed significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and similar trends in other impact categories after the PLF-platform implementation.

Livestock Management for the Delivery of Ecosystem Services in Fire-Prone Shrublands of Atlantic Iberia

Rafael Celaya et al.

Summary: This article introduces the potential of grazing livestock to reduce fire risk, while maintaining quality production and preserving biodiversity in abandoned rural areas with humid climate in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The article summarizes the occurrence of wildfires and the possibility of converting heathlands into grasslands to better meet animals' nutritional requirements and act as natural firebreaks. The specific grazing behavior offers the opportunity to combine different domestic herbivores to achieve sustainable systems. Genotype x environment interactions shape the ability of animals to cope with poor vegetation conditions, and smaller species and breeds perform better. Sustainable grazing systems can lower fire risk and favor rural economies.

Characterization of dairy goat production systems using autochthonous breeds in Andalusia (Southern Spain): Classification and efficiency comparative analysis

Eduardo Morales-Jerrett et al.

Summary: The heterogeneity of caprine production in southern Spain has hindered proper classification and led to a lack of knowledge and decision-making difficulties. This study aimed to characterize and classify different dairy goat systems based on feed management practices and productivity. It identified four distinct dairy goat systems and found significant differences in technical-economic aspects but not in technical efficiency, which was determined by management practices.

Greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration in organic dehesa livestock farms. Does technical-economic management matters?

Miguel Escribano et al.

Summary: Livestock farming has traditionally focused on economic figures, neglecting the impact on the environment and society. This study analyzes organic cattle farming systems in terms of technical-economic management and greenhouse gas emissions. The findings highlight the differences in farms' dependence on subsidies, production intensification, feeding practices, and productivity, as well as the variations in GHG emissions and carbon sequestration levels. The study emphasizes the importance of extensive farms in preserving natural resources, animal welfare, and ecosystem services.

Fat- and protein-corrected milk formulation to be used in the life-cycle assessment of Mediterranean dairy goat systems

Juan Manuel Mancilla-Leyton et al.

Summary: This paper aimed to develop a specific algorithm for calculating fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM) for dairy goat in life-cycle assessment studies. Through multiple regression analysis, equations were developed for FPCM calculations based on the fat and protein content of goat milk, with two groups defined based on fat content. The study highlighted the importance of using a specific FPCM formulation for goat's milk in LCA.

Batch mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion of spent goat batch mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion of spent goat straw bedding and goat cheese whey: Comparison with the mono-digestion of the two sole substrates

M. J. Fernandez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the production of green energy from spent livestock bedding, showing that co-digestion of goat straw bedding and whey can produce biochemical methane potential. Results indicated a decrease in maximum methane production rate and considerable increases in hydrolysis kinetic constants with increased whey concentration.
