Screening Indels from the whole genome to identify the candidates and their association with economic traits in several goat breeds

Ahmed A. Saleh et al.

Summary: In this study, the differentiation in Indels based on the reference genome of goat was detected and compared through the re-sequencing of Dazu-black goat and Inner-Mongolia Cashmere goat. Three candidate Indels were chosen and examined for their association with body weight and dimensions. The results showed that the Del/Del genotype of rs669452874 locus was significantly associated with body dimensions in the studied goat breeds.

The Complex and Diverse Genetic Architecture of the Absence of Horns (Polledness) in Domestic Ruminants, including Goats and Sheep

Rebecca Simon et al.

Summary: This review compares the molecular differences among the causes of inherited polledness in domestic ruminant species, highlighting the complexity of genetic causes for the lack of horns in small ruminants. The associated disorder of intersexuality-polled intersex syndrome (PIS) in goats is also discussed.

Genetic basis investigation of wattle phenotype in goat using genome-wide sequence data

Wei-Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic basis of wattle phenotype in domestic goats. By conducting wide-genome selective sweep analysis (WGSA) and a genome-wide association study (GWAS), multiple genes and pathways related to cartilage development were identified, suggesting that wattle inheritance may be influenced by multiple genes.

The Italian Cilentana goat breed: productive performances and economic perspectives of goat farming in marginal areas

Piera Iommelli et al.

Summary: The Cilentana goat, a small native breed in the internal areas of Cilento, province of Salerno, is reared widely due to its dual-purpose attitude and typical production. The extensive livestock system used allows for sustainable farming in otherwise abandoned territories, ensuring high-quality levels of production. This breed not only provides an important source of income for local communities, but also protects the territory, biodiversity, and historical traditions.

Genome-wide association study for wattles trait in the dairy goat breed

Xiaolong Xu et al.

Summary: Dairy goats are important livestock that provide high-quality milk sources. The wattles trait, a phenotypic character on the neck of a dairy goat, is considered to be under genetic control. A study on 189 dairy goats revealed significant associations between wattles and certain genes on chromosome 10. The identification of these genetic factors will contribute to the understanding of the wattles trait in dairy goats.

The Human Phenotype Ontology in 2021

Sebastian Koehler et al.

Summary: The Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) serves as a global standard for phenotype exchange, with recent major extensions in neurology, nephrology, immunology, pulmonology, and other fields. Efforts have been made to improve computational definitions of phenotypic abnormalities across HPO and multiple phenotype ontologies for animal disease models, benefiting software accuracy and cross-species phenotype matching. Recent initiatives include translating HPO into indigenous languages and advancing its use in electronic health record systems.

Phenotypic ranking experiments in identifying breeding objective traits of smallholder farmers in northwestern Ethiopia

Oumer Sheriff et al.

Summary: The study conducted two live animal ranking experiments, own-flock and group-animal ranking, to determine breeding objectives of Arab and Oromo goat keepers in northwestern Ethiopia. The own-flock ranking experiment revealed a focus on productive, reproductive, and behavioral traits, while the group-animal ranking experiment showed a tendency to prioritize observable physical traits. It is advisable to use both experiments simultaneously in production systems lacking record keeping to identify breeding objectives.

Use of multivariate analysis as a tool in the morphological characterization of the main indigenous bovine ecotypes in northeastern Algeria

Aissam Bousbia et al.

Summary: The study utilized morphometric measurements to characterize 130 adult autochthonous cattle from four different ecotypes, showing significant positive correlations between different variables. Multivariate analysis was effective in distinguishing the ecotypes and identifying specific morphological differences, suggesting a potential for genetic improvement in the Setifien ecotype for sustainable livestock farming.

The climatic and genetic heritage of Italian goat breeds with genomic SNP data

Matteo Cortellari et al.

Summary: The study investigated the genetic structure of Italian goat populations and their link with the environment, revealing three distinct groups reflective of the country's geography and historical background. Landscape genomics analysis identified SNPs associated with growth, circadian rhythm, fertility, and inflammatory response, with calculations of future genotypic frequencies to evaluate long-term effects on genetic structure. Overall, the results provide insight into the past and future of Italian goat populations, aiding in the development of conservation strategies in the face of climate change.

Runs of homozygosity in the Italian goat breeds: impact of management practices in low-input systems

Matteo Cortellari et al.

Summary: The differences in climate and management between the goat populations from Northern and Central-southern Italy have led to varying levels of genomic inbreeding and signatures of selection, as identified through ROH analysis. These findings could provide useful insights for assisting management practices in low-input agricultural systems while preserving the genetic diversity of small populations.

From phenotypical to genomic characterisation of the mannara dog: an italian shepherd canine resource

Luigi Liotta et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive characterisation of the Mannara dog breed, showing that it meets the breed standard, has low inbreeding in the population, and should proceed with the recognition process. The genetic analysis revealed distinct relationships with other dog breeds and good management practices in maintaining genetic diversity within the Mannara population, making it a valuable resource for Sicilian agriculture.
