Applications of computer vision systems for meat safety assurance in abattoirs: A systematic review

Marianne Sandberg et al.

Summary: The new EU legislation from 2017-2019 allowed the use of computer vision systems (CVSs) as tools in meat inspection. A literature review found that most CVSs had high sensitivity and specificity (>80%) in detecting organ contamination and lesions. However, further development and optimization of CVSs are needed for better meat safety assurance.

From the Five Freedoms to a more holistic perspective on animal welfare in the Dutch Animals Act

Annika M. Voogt et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to assess the adequacy of the current Dutch Animals Act in managing animal welfare risks and propose modifications for improvement. The current Act uses an outdated definition of animal welfare and lacks species-specific legislation for certain farm animals. By incorporating the latest scientific insights and integrating animal-based measures into legislation, both the Dutch Animals Act and European legislation can better manage animal welfare risks.

Twelve Threats of Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) for Animal Welfare

Frank A. M. Tuyttens et al.

Summary: The research and development of Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) is thriving, but the potential benefits for animal welfare remain largely unproven. This paper identifies 12 potential threats to animal welfare posed by PLF, including direct harm, indirect harm, changes to housing and management, and ethical implications. It suggests prevention and remedies for direct threats, but acknowledges that addressing the more indirect threats is more challenging. To maximize the potential of PLF for improving animal welfare, both the threats and opportunities should be acknowledged and addressed.
