The effect of new and ancestral inbreeding on milk production traits in Iranian Holstein cattle

Reza Tohidi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of new and ancestral inbreeding on milk, fat, and protein production in Iranian Holstein cattle. The results showed that ancestral inbreeding had a more detrimental effect on performance traits compared to new inbreeding, contradicting the purge hypothesis. Inbreeding depression was observed in Iranian Holstein cows, but no evidence of purging was observed.

The Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Longevity According to Lactation Period Using a Multiple Trait Animal Model in Korean Holstein Cows

Jiseob Shin et al.

Summary: The study focuses on analyzing the culling patterns and survival rates of Korean Holstein cows, as well as evaluating genetic characteristics related to parity and longevity. Results show that genetic backgrounds vary between individuals in terms of survival periods and the heritability of longevity traits is higher in late-lactation compared to early- and mid-lactation.

Genetic Diversity and the Impact of the Breed Proportions of US Brown Swiss in German Brown Cattle

Anna Wirth et al.

Summary: Modern breeding programs aim to improve productivity, functionality, and health traits in dairy cows. However, overuse of top sires may lead to a decline in the gene pool and increased inbreeding, highlighting the importance of monitoring genetic diversity. This study in German Brown population showed a high level of inbreeding and suggested strategies to decrease the rate of inbreeding for future breeding.

Long-term exhaustion of the inbreeding load in Drosophila melanogaster

Noelia Perez-Pereira et al.

Summary: Inbreeding depression is caused by the expression of deleterious genes due to inbreeding, and genetic purging removes these harmful genes by expressing them in homozygous state. Results of long-term inbreeding experiments on Drosophila suggest that inbreeding load can be significantly reduced after numerous generations, especially in large populations. This highlights the importance of genetic purging in reducing inbreeding depression.

Analysis of culling reasons and age at culling in Australian dairy cattle

Zewdie Wondatir Workie et al.

Summary: The study found that the main reasons for culling in Australian dairy cows over a 21-year period were infertility, mastitis, low production, being sold for dairy purposes, and old age. The average age at culling was similar for Holstein and Jersey cows, with a slight increase in age for Holstein cows and a slight decrease for Jersey cows over the last two decades.
