Genetic Correlations between Boar Taint Compound Concentrations in Fat of Purebred Boars and Production and Ham Quality Traits in Crossbred Heavy Pigs

Sara Faggion et al.

Summary: The study found that selecting pigs with reduced ability to accumulate boar taint compounds is an alternative to surgical castration. However, it is crucial to consider the potential impacts on commercial traits in crossbred pigs before selecting against boar taint in purebreds. The results showed that there is a correlation between boar taint compound concentrations and carcass and ham quality traits.

Weighted genome-wide association study reveals new candidate genes related to boar taint compounds

Margareth Evangelista Botelho et al.

Summary: Weighted single-step genome-wide association study (WssGWAS) and post-GWAS analysis can be used to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) and candidate genes linked to boar taint in pigs. In this study, a total of 16 windows on different chromosomes were identified as associated with boar taint compounds, explaining a small percentage of the genetic variance. A total of 128 candidate genes, including five new ones, were also identified in significant QTL regions. The findings provide insights into the occurrence of boar taint and potential targets for selection against it.

Applying an association weight matrix in weighted genomic prediction of boar taint compounds

Margareth E. Botelho et al.

Summary: Using gene networks and AWM matrix to derive weights for genomic prediction did not improve the predictive ability for boar taint compounds and increased the number of analysis steps. ssGBLUP was found to be the most appropriate method for analyzing boar taint compounds compared to the weighted strategies used in the study.

Recent genetic advances on boar taint reduction as an alternative to castration: a review

Darlene Ana Souza Duarte et al.

Summary: Boar taint is an unpleasant odor in male pig meat caused by androstenone, skatole, and indole, primarily stored in fat tissue. Castration is a common practice to prevent boar taint, but may be banned due to animal welfare concerns. Genetic selection against compounds like androstenone and skatole has shown potential, with moderate to high heritability, but may impact reproduction traits negatively.

How to Improve Meat Quality and Welfare in Entire Male Pigs by Genetics

Catherine Larzul

Summary: Successful breeding of entire male pigs requires a better understanding of factors influencing meat quality and behavior traits, especially due to lower meat quality, boar taint, and aggression issues. Giving up surgical castration is preferable to avoid pain, but breeding entire males leads to concerns regarding meat quality, boar taint, and aggression. Selection against boar taint and aggressive behaviors is feasible, but faces challenges in phenotyping, while new developments in modelization and genomic data may help address these issues in the future.
