Detection and genetic characterization of canine distemper virus isolated in civets in Vietnam

Phai Dam Van et al.

Summary: This study investigated a possible canine distemper (CD) outbreak in a backyard farm in Hanoi, Vietnam, where 32 diseased civets were found. These civets showed clinical signs similar to CD, and samples collected from dead civets confirmed the presence of CDV. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the CDV strains isolated from the civets belonged to the Asia-1 lineage, closely related to strains from dogs in Thailand, China, and Vietnam. Histopathological examination showed severe pneumonia and other pathological changes. This study is the first to detect CDV in civets in Vietnam.

A recent distemper virus outbreak in the growing canine populations of Galapagos Islands: a persistent threat for the endangered Galapagos Sea Lion

Patricio Vega-Marino et al.

Summary: Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) is a highly contagious virus that affects both domestic animals and wildlife. This study reports an outbreak of CDV in the Galapagos Islands in 2019. A total of 125 dogs with clinical signs of CDV were included in the study, and a RT-qPCR analysis showed a positivity rate of 74.4%. Despite efforts for population control and vaccination, CDV still poses a threat to the Galapagos sea lion.

Unusual Canine Distemper Virus Infection in Captive Raccoons (Procyon lotor)

Adrian Constantin Stancu et al.

Summary: This study reports the infection of canine distemper virus (CDV) in seven raccoons from a zoo in Romania. Multiple tests including clinical, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry confirmed the CDV infection. The results showed that CDV was the cause of death in these raccoons.

Infection of ferrets with wild type-based recombinant canine distemper virus overwhelms the immune system and causes fatal systemic disease

Brigitta M. Laksono et al.

Summary: Infection with recombinant canine distemper virus (rCDV) has been used to understand measles pathogenesis and immune suppression. The study explored the pathogenesis of the first wild type-based rCDV in ferrets, finding that CDV often overwhelms the immune system and spreads to multiple tissues in the absence of neutralizing antibody response.

Canine distemper virus in wildlife in south-western Europe

Alvaro Oleaga et al.

Summary: The emergence and re-emergence of the canine distemper virus (CDV) in the Asturias region of Atlantic Spain has led to mortality in multiple carnivore species, with a high prevalence of CDV antibodies in badgers indicating long-term but unstable viral circulation in the multi-host community. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that the CDV strain belonged to the European lineage, raising concerns for carnivore management and conservation.

Neuropathologic and molecular aspects of a canine distemper epizootic in red foxes in Germany

Franziska Geiselhardt et al.

Summary: An epidemic of canine distemper virus (CDV) with neurotropism has occurred in Europe, particularly affecting red foxes. Tissue samples from CDV-infected red foxes in Northwestern Germany were studied to understand the neurotropic aspects of the disease. The analysis revealed inflammation and disruption in the gray matter of the brain and cerebellum, as well as axonal damage. The virus strains belonged to three different sub-lineages. These findings provide insights into the pathology and genetic characteristics of CDV in red foxes.
