Summary: This study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on owner-pet relationships, stress, and loneliness. The results showed that the closeness between owners and their pets increased during the pandemic, and dog owners experienced greater reductions in stress and loneliness compared to cat and non-pet owners. However, pet ownership did not have a mitigating effect on stress and social loneliness, but was associated with lower emotional loneliness caused by deficits in romantic relationships.

Puppies Raised during the COVID-19 Lockdown Showed Fearful and Aggressive Behaviors in Adulthood: An Italian Survey

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Italian government implemented a decree called #Iorestoacasa (I stay at home) from 11 March to 3 May 2020, requiring people to stay indoors with few exceptions. This measure had a significant impact on the mental health of both humans and dogs. A national survey compared the personalities of adult dogs that were puppies during the lockdown period with those born later. The results showed an increase in fear and aggression traits in dogs that experienced socialization restrictions, indicating the strong influence of the pandemic on their behavioral development. It is recommended to closely monitor these dogs and provide specialized behavioral rehabilitation therapy to reduce the risk of aggression and fearfulness and improve their well-being.

Animal hoarding: a systematic review

Summary: Animal hoarding is a special manifestation of hoarding disorder, characterized by the accumulation of animals and failure to provide them with minimal care. This systematic review evaluates the characteristics of animal hoarding, focusing on the profile of affected individuals and the features of accumulation behavior. The studies indicate that animal hoarders are mainly middle-aged, unmarried women living alone in urban areas, and their residences are often unsanitary. Cats and dogs are the most hoarded species, mainly acquired through unplanned breeding, and the conditions of the animals are characterized by disease, injury, behavioral problems, and a lack of hygiene. Animal carcasses are found in up to 60% of the hoarding properties.
