Effects of feeding level, milking frequency, and single injection of cabergoline on blood metabolites, hormones, and minerals around dry-off in dairy cows

Lorenzo E. Hernandez-Castellano et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of different dry-off strategies on blood metabolites, hormones, and minerals. It was found that reducing feeding level and milking frequency can decrease glucose and insulin concentrations while increasing free fatty acid concentrations in dairy cows. The injection of dopamine agonist cabergoline can reduce prolactin concentration and cause abnormal changes in plasma metabolites, hormones, and minerals.

Coat color affects cortisol and serotonin levels in the serum and hairs of Holstein dairy cows exposed to cold winter

J. Ghassemi Nejad et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that coat color significantly affects hair cortisol levels but not serum cortisol and serotonin levels in cows. This follow-up study found that coat color also affects both serum and hair cortisol and serotonin levels in winter-housed dairy cows. Cows with black coat color had lower hair cortisol and higher hair serotonin levels compared to cows with white coat color.

Researching Human-Cattle Interaction on Rangelands: Challenges and Potential Solutions

Maggie Creamer et al.

Summary: Research on human-animal interactions with beef cattle often occurs during stress-inducing contexts, potentially skewing behavioral and physiological responses. Future studies should consider conducting experiments in low stress contexts to better understand how animal personality and previous experience influence cattle production and welfare. By adapting methods used for wildlife response research, researchers may gain insights into improving the quality and outcomes of human-cattle interactions on rangelands.

Gene expression profiles underlying aggressive behavior in the prefrontal cortex of cattle

Paulina G. Eusebi et al.

Summary: This study compared gene expression profiles of aggressive and non-aggressive cattle breeds, revealing up-regulated genes related to pathways like Alzheimer's disease, integrins, and ERK/MAPK signaling in aggressive cattle. Down-regulated genes may be associated with PFC activity and aggression. These findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying aggressive behavior.

Effect of Intense Exercise on Plasma Macrominerals and Trace Elements in Lidia Bulls

Francisco Escalera-Valente et al.

Summary: The study assessed plasma minerals concentration in Lidia bulls after intense physical exercise during a bull fight. It was found that calcium, phosphorus, magnesium levels were higher than reported reference values, while cobalt, selenium, and molybdenum levels were lower than other bovine breeds.

Adrenergic Tone as an Intermediary in the Temperament Syndrome Associated With Flight Speed in Beef Cattle

Ian G. Colditz

Summary: This review examines the impact of temperament on farm animals and its associations with flight speed as an objective measure. Flight speed is linked to various physiological processes and behaviors, affecting productivity and health outcomes. The influence of adrenergic tone on this suite of traits, as well as the implications for welfare and ecological fit, are also discussed.
