Dietary host-associated Bacillus subtilis supplementation improves intestinal microbiota, health and disease resistance in Chinese perch (Siniperca chuatsi)

Zhehui Ji et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of a host-associated Bacillus subtilis 1-C-7 as a probiotic for Chinese perch. The results showed that moderate supplementation with Bacillus subtilis 1-C-7 improved the intestinal microbiota, intestinal health, and disease resistance in Chinese perch, but excessive supplementation reduced growth performance and had negative effects on health.

Chlorogenic acid attenuates inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis and protects head kidney macrophage of yellow catfish from ammonia toxicity

Haibo Jiang et al.

Summary: The study explored the cytotoxic effects of ammonia and the protective effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) on head kidney macrophage of yellow catfish. Ammonia treatment reduced cell viability and up-regulated pro-inflammatory genes expression, while CGA attenuated the toxic effects of ammonia. These findings suggest CGA as a potential natural supplement to alleviate ammonia toxicity in fish.

Nature-identical compounds as feed additives in aquaculture

Jose Maria Garcia Beltran et al.

Summary: Aquaculture sustainable development is crucial for meeting human demand of aquatic products, and the use of natural immunostimulants as feed additives plays a significant role in improving fish health and preserving the environment. Nature-identical compounds, serving as a cost-effective alternative to plant compounds, are now being widely researched to enhance fish immune system, prevent diseases, and control bacterial infections in aquaculture.

Effects of water temperatures and dietary protein levels on growth, body composition and blood biochemistry of juvenile GIFT tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Nan-Nan Zeng et al.

Summary: Results of the study showed that the growth, feed utilization, and protein efficiency of GIFT tilapia were significantly improved with higher dietary protein levels. Fish raised at 28 and 34 degrees Celsius exhibited similar growth performance which was higher than those raised at 22 degrees Celsius. Serum biochemical indices decreased with increasing dietary protein levels, and the optimal protein requirement for maximal growth performance varied with water temperature.

Benefits of Dietary Polyphenols and Polyphenol-Rich Additives to Aquatic Animal Health: An Overview

Ehsan Ahmadifar et al.

Summary: Polyphenols, derived from plants, have shown to have beneficial effects on fish health and production in aquaculture. By impacting growth, immune function, disease resistance, and other aspects, polyphenols serve as safe and viable alternatives to synthetic chemical compounds in enhancing fish quality and productivity while reducing chemical and antibiotic use in aquatic ecosystems.

Dietary rutin promoted the growth, serum antioxidant response and flesh collagen, free amino acids contents of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella)

Z. Xu et al.

Summary: Dietary rutin supplementation can improve the growth, antioxidant response ability, and flesh quality of grass carp, with the recommended supplemental level being 0.8-1.0 g/kg. Rutin inclusion enhanced weight gain, reduced feed conversion ratio, increased serum SOD activity, decreased serum MDA content, increased collagen content and total free amino acids in flesh, and promoted the content of n-3 PUFA in flesh. However, it did not significantly affect flesh texture and water-holding capacity.

A grass carp model with an antibiotic-disrupted intestinal microbiota

Bing-Yao Sun et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a reliable grass carp model with disrupted intestinal microbiota using different concentrations of antibiotics. The effects of various antibiotic regimens on microbiota composition, growth, health status, and histology in different organs were compared. The highest antibiotic concentration was found to significantly disrupt microbiota composition without substantial negative effects on growth and health in grass carp, suggesting this regimen as a suitable option for disrupting intestinal microbiota.
