Fruit fly phylogeny imprints bacterial gut microbiota

Virginie Ravigne et al.

Summary: One promising approach to balance crop production and ecosystem preservation is through the manipulation of beneficial biotic interactions, particularly between insects and microbes. This study investigated the contributions of fly phylogeny, fly specialization, and fly sampling environment to the composition and structure of bacterial gut microbiota in fruit flies. The results showed that fly identity and sampling environment were strong determinants of microbial profiles, while fly specialization had little impact. These findings suggest that fruit flies exert important control over their gut microbiota through vertical transmission and environmental filtering.

Summary: Sexual variation plays a crucial role in shaping the gut bacterial community in P. astrigera spiders, while the distinct differences in bacterial composition are mainly due to their different nutritional and energy requirements.

Diversity and Function of Wolf Spider Gut Microbiota Revealed by Shotgun Metagenomics

Runbiao Wu et al.

Summary: This study compared the gut microbiota of two wolf spider species, Pardosa agraria and P. laura, from different ecosystems and found similarities in richness and abundance, but differences in microbial composition and function. The gut microbiota of P. laura were enriched in genes for carbohydrate metabolism, while those of P. agraria showed a higher proportion of genes encoding acetyltransferase, linked to antibiotic resistance. Furthermore, three high-quality microbial genomes were reconstructed, providing insights into the diversity and function of gut microbiota in closely related spiders.

Summary: This study investigated the gut bacterial diversity and metabolic role of twelve species from the family Araneidae in India, revealing high richness and diversity in the subfamily Araneinae. The analysis showed no congruence between the gut bacteria composition dendrogram and host phylogeny.

Compartmentalization of bacterial and fungal microbiomes in the gut of adult honeybees

Matteo Callegari et al.

Summary: The core gut microbiome of adult honeybees comprises a set of recurring bacterial phylotypes, accompanied by lineage-specific, variable, and less abundant environmental bacterial phylotypes. The distribution and abundance of microbial components in the gut are consistently compartment-specific for all the three microbial components, indicating that the ecological and physiological interactions among the host and microbiome vary with changing physico-chemical and metabolic conditions of the gut.

Interspecific variation and functional traits of the gut microbiome in spiders from the wild: The largest effort so far

Kaomud Tyagi et al.

Summary: Spiders, as one of the most diverse groups in the phylum arthropod, play an important role in various ecosystems as predators, silk producers, and in medicinal applications. Research has shown that the gut microbiota of spiders from different families and geographical locations have similar bacterial composition patterns, with the Lycosidae family showing higher bacterial diversity compared to Salticidae, Tetragnathidae, and Araneidae. Additionally, the abundance of endosymbiont genera like Wolbachia and Rickettsia in spider species can lead to shifts in other bacterial taxa and potentially cause sexual alterations. Functional analysis based on PICRUSt2 revealed that the gut microbiota of spider species are involved in various metabolic functions.

Microbiome Structure of the Aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) Is Shaped by Different Solanaceae Plant Diets

Baoyu He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of diet on the microbiome of M. persicae, finding significant changes in the bacterial community composition when aphids were transferred to different Solanaceae plants. Notably, there was a substantial increase in Pseudomonas abundance, especially under pepper plant diet. Additionally, negative effects on aphid population dynamics were observed when they were fed on pepper plants.
