The effect of bait air broadcasting by unmanned aerial vehicles on the ant community diversity

Shenlei Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the control effect of bait broadcasting by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on the imported fire ant and evaluates its impact on biodiversity. The results suggest that broadcasting larger amounts of bait can achieve better control, but it also leads to a reduction in native ant diversity.

Evaluating control methods for red imported fire ant and their effects on hibiscus mealybug in citrus

Eric G. Middleton et al.

Summary: Controlling the red imported fire ant is necessary for effective management of the hibiscus mealybug. Ground applications of insecticide and two ant baits significantly reduced the abundance of fire ants tending to mealybug colonies. However, different control methods had different impacts on the abundance of the ant species Brachymyrmex obscurior and natural enemies.

Fipronil affects cockroach behavior and olfactory memory

Maria Eduarda Rosa et al.

Summary: In this study, the sublethal effects of Fipronil (Fpl) on behavior and physiology of cockroaches were evaluated. The findings showed that sublethal doses of Fpl increased grooming time, inhibited exploratory activity, caused neuromuscular blockade, negative cardiac chronotropism, and disrupted learning and olfactory memory formation. These results have implications for pesticide risk assessment and understanding the effects of pesticides on other insects, such as honey bees.

Integrated mass spectrometry imaging and metabolomics reveals sublethal effects of indoxacarb on the red fire ant Solenopsis invicta

Mingyi Du et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolic changes in red fire ants treated with indoxacarb using mass spectrometry imaging and untargeted metabolomics methods. The results showed significant alterations in metabolite levels, including carbohydrates, amino acids, and pyrimidine and derivatives. The label-free MSI method visualized the spatial distribution and regulation of key metabolites, revealing the association between indoxacarb toxicity and disturbance in metabolic pathways.

Paving Behavior in Ants and Its Potential Application in Monitoring Two Urban Pest Ants, Solenopsis invicta and Tapinoma melanocephalum

Liming Shen et al.

Summary: Adhesive tapes are as effective as baits and pitfall traps in monitoring Solenopsis invicta and Tapinoma melanocephalum in urban areas in southern China. However, adhesive tapes detected less ants and fewer species of non-target ants than baits and pitfall traps. Our study demonstrated that tape-paving behavior can potentially be used in developing more specific monitoring methods for S. invicta and T. melanocephalum in urban areas in southern China.

A β-cyclodextrin-functionalized metal-organic framework enhances the insecticidal activity of indoxacarb by affecting amino acid metabolism in red imported fire ants

Liupeng Yang et al.

Summary: The invasion of red imported fire ants in China is causing increasing damage. A smart nanopesticide that responds to environmental stimuli has been developed to improve insecticidal effects. The smart pesticide showed enhanced toxicity towards fire ants and disrupted their metabolic pathways, providing insight into sustainable pest management.

Object use in insects

Chao Wen et al.

Summary: This review article introduces insect object-use behavior, including behavioral flexibility, patterns, and the role of cultural evolution. Although insect object use is not widespread, it has been documented in different species of insects. Insects use objects in activities such as foraging, defense, courtship, and play. Intelligence, pre-existing manipulative behaviors, and anatomical structure influence innovations in object use, while learning and imitation are the main mechanisms underlying the spread of object-use behaviors within populations.

Laboratory and Field Evaluations of Two Bait Formulations Against the Invasive Fire Ant, Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Rino Yasudai et al.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy of two bait products, Arino-su-korori and Hyper Arino-su-korori, in controlling the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta. Both baits demonstrated high mortalities of fire ants in laboratory conditions and significantly reduced their foraging activities in the field. Arino-su-korori performed slightly better than Hyper Arino-su-korori in terms of colony elimination and long-term suppression of field fire ants.

Red imported fire ants cover the insecticide-treated surfaces with particles to reduce contact toxicity

Chao Wen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavioral responses of S. invicta workers to surfaces treated with insecticides, and finds that the ants can perform particle-covering behavior to reduce the toxicity of certain insecticides, which constitutes a unique insecticide-resistance strategy in ants.

Summary: The red imported fire ant poses a significant threat to biodiversity and ecosystems through its invasive behavior. Red imported fire ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) cover inaccessible surfaces with particles to facilitate food search and transportation

Chao Wen et al.

Summary: The study shows that worker ants of red imported fire ants deposit more soil particles on viscose or surfaces treated with essential balm or liquid paraffin in the presence of real food, and this behavior is observed in the field as well. Additionally, when no soil particles are available, the ants can only search and transport food on surfaces covered with sufficient quantities of soil particles.
