Dynamic Economic Thresholds for Insecticide Applications Against Agricultural Pests: Importance of Pest and Natural Enemy Migration

Tamar Keasar et al.

Summary: In Integrated Pest Management programs, insecticides are applied when pest densities exceed economic thresholds. However, under high natural enemy density, the economic threshold can be increased to reduce insecticide applications. The ability of natural enemies to disperse from sprayed areas and immigrate to unsprayed areas affects their biological control potential.

Potential Global Distribution of Invasive Alien Species, Anthonomus grandis Boheman, under Current and Future Climate Using Optimal MaxEnt Model

Zhenan Jin et al.

Summary: This study used bioclimatic variables and the MaxEnt model to predict the global distribution of the boll weevil under current and future climate scenarios. It found that the suitable habitats of the boll weevil are mainly distributed in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The findings provide important reference for researchers, quarantine officers, and governments to devise management control strategies for the boll weevil.

Insecticides in Use and Risk of Control Failure of Boll Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in the Brazilian Cerrado

Jorge Braz Torres et al.

Summary: Growers in the Brazilian Cerrado region heavily rely on synthetic insecticides for controlling boll weevil infestation in cotton plants. However, there is no correlation between the number of insecticide applications and the effectiveness of boll weevil control. The major challenges in effective boll weevil management include controlling cotton regrowth and volunteer cotton plants, as well as the low efficacy of insecticides. Growers have identified five potential insecticides for recommendation to combat other pests in cotton plants.

Dispersal of boll weevil toward and within the cotton plant and implications for insecticide exposure

Lucas S. Arruda et al.

Summary: Boll weevil adults exhibit within-plant distribution that minimizes contact with insecticide residue on plant foliage. Short residual control with malathion, the most commonly used insecticide, and low susceptibility to pyrethroids pose challenges for boll weevil control in Brazilian cotton fields.

Field-evolved resistance to beta-cyfluthrin in the boll weevil: Detection and characterization

Guilherme G. Rolim et al.

Summary: Insecticide resistance in arthropods, especially boll weevils, is a major cause of control failure. This study in Brazil found that boll weevils have high levels of resistance to beta-cyfluthrin through a kdr mutation mechanism. Caution is advised against further use of beta-cyfluthrin due to potential resistance, and monitoring studies are recommended to determine the extent of pyrethroid resistance in boll weevil populations.

Cotton row spacing for boll weevil management in low-input production systems

Elcio Antonio Paim et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that altering row spacing can effectively reduce boll weevil infestations and improve yield and fiber quality in low-input systems in Brazil. Narrow row spacing was the least effective, while conventional and wide spacings delayed boll weevil control interventions and resulted in lower numbers of boll weevils early in the season.
