Mechanical Design and Feasibility of a Finger Exoskeleton to Support Finger Extension of Severely Affected Stroke Patients

Claudia J. W. Haarman et al.

Summary: In this paper, we presented a low-profile and lightweight exoskeleton that supports finger extension for stroke patients during daily activities. The exoskeleton is secured to the index finger and allows grasping objects by extending the flexed joint. Technical tests confirmed its ability to counteract passive flexion moments in severely affected patients. A feasibility study showed increased range of motion and improved grasp capability with the exoskeleton. The results suggest the potential for partially restoring hand function in stroke patients.

Global, regional, and national burden of stroke and its risk factors, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Valery L. Feigin et al.

Summary: Regularly updated data on stroke including incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability, risk factors, and trends are crucial for evidence-based care planning. The Global Burden of Diseases Study provides comprehensive measurement of these metrics. From 1990 to 2019, while age-standardized rates improved, the number of strokes and deaths increased. Low-income countries had the highest stroke-related mortality and DALY rates, with high body-mass index being the fastest-growing risk factor.

Modeling and Evaluation of a Novel Hybrid-Driven Compliant Hand Exoskeleton Based on Human-Machine Coupling Model

Qiaoling Meng et al.

Summary: This study presents a modeling design method for a novel hybrid-driven compliant hand exoskeleton based on a human-machine coupling model. The proposed method utilizes a flexible hinge and cable-driven mechanism to drive finger movement, while incorporating a hand orthosis for patients with hand dysfunction. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in various capabilities and good bionics of the design. The novel modeling method can be easily applied for personalized design in rehabilitation engineering.

Human-Exoskeleton Coupling Dynamics of a Multi-Mode Therapeutic Exoskeleton for Upper Limb Rehabilitation Training

Qiaolian Xie et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to establish the human-exoskeleton coupling dynamic model of the upper limb exoskeleton and propose a dynamic parameter identification method suitable for patient training. The results show that the model has good prediction accuracy in both PAT and PPT modes, which helps provide different training effects and optimal assistance for stroke patients.
