Characteristics of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell under PWM Illumination: Toward Indoor Light-Energy Harvesting in the Solid-State Lighting Era

Kazuya Tada

Summary: The dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is a sustainable power source for indoor IoT edge devices. With the transition to solid-state lighting devices using LEDs, the prompt response of LEDs allows for precise change of the illumination level using PWM. However, PWM illumination can cause flickering and have negative effects on human health. Research shows that a commercial indoor DSSC performs well under high-frequency PWM illumination, unlike indoor amorphous-Si solar cells. This highlights the superiority of DSSC for modern indoor applications.

Bayesian estimation of equivalent circuit parameters of photovoltaic cells

Kazuya Tada

Summary: The equivalent circuit model of a photovoltaic cell is helpful in understanding device loss mechanisms and in designing and analyzing systems that use photovoltaic cells. A data-driven approach using Bayesian estimation is proposed in this study to extract equivalent circuit parameters, which does not require tedious initial value adjustments and provides an estimation error unlike the conventional least-squares method.
