A deep journey into image enhancement: A survey of current and emerging trends

Dawa Chyophel Lepcha et al.

Summary: Images captured under poor-illumination conditions often have poor contrasts, low brightness, narrow gray range, colour distortions, and considerable interference, which severely affect qualitative visual effects and restrict the efficiency of machine vision systems. Underwater images often suffer from colour shift and contrast degradation due to light absorption and scattering in water, limiting their use in marine archaeology and biology. Medical images are important for detecting and diagnosing medical conditions, but their quality can be degraded by factors like noise interference, artefacts, and poor illumination.

A Novel Fuzzy DBNet for Medical Image Segmentation

Chiun-Li Chin et al.

Summary: When doctors and pharmacists are fatigued, they may make errors in diagnostic and medication dispensing. Object segmentation plays a crucial role in healthcare-related areas, but traditional deep-learning algorithms often fail to accurately segment or classify images with blur or incompleteness. Therefore, the proposed Fuzzy DBNet combines the dual butterfly network and fuzzy ASPP to process images from both sides of an object simultaneously, achieving high performance in multi-pill and lung segmentation tasks.

Summary: The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths in the United States in 2023. While incidence trends for most cancers are favorable, prostate cancer saw a significant increase of 3% annually from 2014 to 2019. However, the overall cancer death rate continues to decline due to advances in treatment, with a 33% reduction since 1991.

On stability of maximal entropy OWA operator weights

Istvan A. Harmati et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the approximation of maximal entropy OWA weights using a nonlinear programming problem with a linear constraint. The well-posedness and continuity of the problem are proved, and the stability of the weights under small changes in the level of orness is demonstrated.

Mammogram Image Enhancement Techniques for Online Breast Cancer Detection and Diagnosis

Daniel S. da Silva et al.

Summary: Breast cancer, with the highest incidence and mortality among female cancers, requires the use of modern technologies to improve the accuracy and efficiency of medical diagnosis. In this study, a dataset containing 780 images of tumor-affected individuals was used to experiment with image enhancement techniques and various classification algorithms. The results showed that the bilateral algorithm and SVM classifier achieved the best performance, with an overall accuracy of 96.69% and a malignant nodule detection accuracy of 95.11%.

Current and future burden of breast cancer: Global statistics for 2020 and 2040

Melina Arnold et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with over 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths in 2020. There is significant geographic variation in incidence rates, with lower rates in some Asian and African countries and higher rates in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Northern America, and parts of Europe. Mortality rates show less variation, but transitioning countries still bear a disproportionate burden of breast cancer deaths. By 2040, the burden of breast cancer is predicted to increase further due to population growth and ageing. Global efforts are needed to address this growing burden, especially in transitioning countries where incidence rates are rising rapidly and mortality rates remain high.

Summary: The paper introduces an extension of OWA operators allowing greater flexibility and the use of different types of OWA operators on the same dataset. Various interesting examples have been studied and a sufficient condition for ensuring the monotonicity of the new flexible operator has been presented.

An objective method to evaluate exemplar-based inpainted images quality using Jaccard index

Dariush Amirkhani et al.

Summary: Objective evaluation of image inpainting is crucial but lacking in current methods. A new objective measure was proposed in this study based on saliency map features, with consideration of penalty and compensation. Experimental results showed that the proposed measure performed better than other evaluation methods and correlated with human subjective judgments.
