Real-time evaluation of mechanical qualities of ballast bed in railway tamping maintenance

Liang Gao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the mechanical qualities of ballast beds by assessing the impact force on tamper. A novel test device was developed to accurately measure the impact force. Experimental results showed that tamping reduced the lateral resistance and support stiffness of the ballast bed. A tamping-ballasted track coupling model was constructed and validated, and a mathematical expression was developed to invert the mechanical qualities of ballast bed based on the impact force. This study achieved an innovative real-time evaluation of the ballast bed and provided a convenient and cost-effective way to gather health information of ballasted tracks.

Under ballast mat - A review of recent developments, limitations, and future prospects

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: As trains become faster and heavier, there is an increasing frequency of loadings and excessive axle loads. Improving track design, particularly through the use of under ballast mats, is crucial for performance enhancement. These mats not only reduce noise, vibration, and ballast degradation, but also enhance the dynamic behavior of tracks, leading to a longer service life and increased safety.

Calibration method for discrete element modeling of ballast particles

Peyman Aela et al.

Summary: This research proposes an efficient method for calibrating the input parameters of the discrete element method (DEM) to simulate the behavior of ballast particles under static and dynamic loading conditions. The method involves creating clumps to describe the shape of particles and using different tests to calibrate parameters such as friction coefficients, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and restitution coefficient.

Numerical modelling of particle entrainment in the wheel-rail interface

Sadaf Maramizonouz et al.

Summary: The process of applying sand particles to increase traction between wheel and rail is reported to have an efficiency of less than 20%. The Discrete Element Method is used to simulate the process and the results are validated against experimental observations. The simulations confirm that the highest efficiency can be achieved when the sander is aimed at the wheel/rail nip.

Numerical simulation of the three-sleeper asynchronous tamping operation of ballast bed based on the virtual unit module and polyhedral ballast model

Zhihai Zhang et al.

Summary: Reasonable asynchronous tamping operation is crucial for the performance of the ballast bed. A novel method of plane reconstruction and space fusion for rapid construction of polyhedral ballast particles is proposed to better simulate the three-sleeper asynchronous tamping operation. The contact force inside the ballast bed is analyzed using a new relative velocity friction model. The results verify the effectiveness of the coupling model of the three-sleeper asynchronous tamping machine-ballasted track.

Pengfei Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, the contact parameters of particulate materials were calibrated via a physical test and simulation test. The dynamic angle of repose of the particulate materials was measured at 41.32 degrees with a standard deviation of 1.33 degrees. A mathematical model of the dynamic angle of repose and the three most influential parameters was created through simulation experiments and optimization.

Evolution of trackbed performance and ballast degradation due to passages of million train wheel axle loads

Qiusheng Gu et al.

Summary: The increases in train speeds and wheel axle loads have a significant impact on ballasted tracks, leading to reduced trackbed performance and ballast breakage. The study shows that long-term train loads greatly increase the static and dynamic sleeper support stiffness, and ballast breakage and particle rearrangement contribute to the densification of the trackbed.
