Impact of the eco-efficiency of food production on the water-land-food system coordination in China: A discussion of the moderation effect of environmental regulation

Ziqiang Li et al.

Summary: Based on the perspective of symbiosis theory, this study explored practical strategies for enhancing the coordination of the water-land-food system in China. The results showed that the coordination level of the WLF system showed a decreasing trend followed by an increasing trend, with the highest level in the Northeast. The eco-efficiency of food production had a positive effect on WLF system coordination but with a time lag. Environmental regulation also played a positive moderating role in promoting the ecological efficiency of food production and the coherence of the WLF system.

Complexity and diversity of nexuses: A review of the nexus approach in the sustainability context

Ronald C. Estoque

Summary: This review examines the historical origin and progress of the nexus approach, which serves as a tool for systems integration, a platform for stakeholder engagement, and a method for exploring development pathways. The nexus approach has become more complex and diverse over time, involving resource sectors/systems and/or specific social-ecological issues. However, there is still no consensus on key nexus components that cover all sustainable development goals.

A review of globally available data sources for modelling the Water-Energy-Food Nexus

Jack W. Lodge et al.

Summary: The Water-Energy-Food Nexus (WEFN) faces a crucial barrier of data availability for its global implementation. To help modellers and practitioners overcome this barrier, "data hierarchies" were created to specify suitable data for modelling water, energy, and food availability globally. The review also identified variables that are poorly monitored by global data sources and discussed their interactions in the WEFN for the first time. The findings and data interactions were used to recommend priority areas for improving global data availability from a WEFN perspective, including streamflow, wind speed, and hydropower data.

Water-energy-ecosystem nexus modeling using multi-objective, non-linear programming in a regulated river: Exploring tradeoffs among environmental flows, cascaded small hydropower, and inter-basin water diversion projects

Dongqin Yin et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the optimal operation and scientific management of a complicated water resources system in a regulated river with cascaded small hydropower plants and inter-basin water diversion projects. The research established a nexus system model that considers water resources utilization, energy production, and riverine environmental conservation as the main objectives, using weighted multi-objective programming. Furthermore, the study estimated environmental flows and assessed the environmental impact on the river, conducted optimizations and analyses for multiple scenarios using historical runoff data, and quantitatively identified sectoral linkages relating to the water-energy-ecosystem nexus.

A computationally efficient hydrologic modeling framework to simulate surface-subsurface hydrological processes at the hillslope scale

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: Considering the interaction between surface and subsurface is crucial for predicting water movement and quality in the environment. In this study, a new efficient coupling routine for 1D surface-subsurface modeling was developed by combining KINEROS2 (K2) and HYDRUS-1D (H1D) open-source codes. The approach successfully accounted for surface ponding and water exchange between the two model domains, allowing for accurate representation of subsurface behavior below each overland flow plane.

Feasibility analysis of wind and solar powered desalination plants: An application to islands

David Borge-Diez et al.

Summary: The challenge of economic surveillance for water projects driven by non-conventional energy sources lies in balancing the need for guaranteed profits in liberalized markets. Combining renewable energy systems with desalination plants is a common solution to the global water scarcity issue. Grants, investment rates, and energy and water sales play key roles in the commercialization of desalination technologies, with factors such as concessional grants, investor expectations, and water-energy sales influencing the economic viability of such projects.
