Low-temperature oxidation of n-octane and n-decane in shock tubes: Differences in time histories of key intermediates

Rishav Choudhary et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of chain length on the time histories of key intermediate species during the first-stage ignition. Measurements were conducted on CO, CH2O, OH, and carbonyl compounds during the low temperature oxidation of n-octane and n-decane. Significant differences were observed between the measured and predicted ignition delay times and species formation rates. The measurements will contribute to the improvement of kinetic models and the development of rate rules for similar fuels. The study also revealed differences in the reactivity of n-octane and n-decane, indicating a correlation between species time histories, reactivity, and chain length.

Effects of oxidation degree and antioxidant addition on the carbon deposition tendency of jatropha biodiesel

Zhenyu Dong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the carbon deposition tendency of jatropha biodiesel with different oxidation degrees by analyzing the residual carbon value and existent gum content. The chemical components of residual carbon and existent gum were analyzed before and after oxidation using GC-MS and infrared spectrometer. The results showed that in the short-term oxidation process, both residual carbon and existent gum content initially decreased and then increased with oxidation time. In the long-term oxidation process, these indicators continuously increased with oxidation time. The addition of antioxidants had an inhibitive effect on carbon residue and existent gum formation in biodiesel.

Summary: This study proposed a reliable and convenient predictive method for determining the cetane number of biodiesel. Key parameters were screened out and a predictive model was established using multiple linear regressions. Experimental data verified the validity of the proposed predictive equation, with key parameters including the number of carbon atoms (NC), allylic position equivalent (APE), and double-bond equivalent (DBE) showing significant influence on the cetane number.

Effect of repeated heating of coconut, sunflower, and palm oils on their fatty acid profiles, biodiesel properties and performance, combustion, and emission, characteristics of a diesel engine fueled with their biodiesel blends

M. Muhammed Niyas et al.

Summary: After heating coconut, sunflower, and palm oils five times, the unsaturated compounds in the biodiesel decreased while short-chain components, density, kinematic viscosity, and calorific value increased. B20 blends of these biodiesels in diesel engines showed decreased thermal efficiency and emissions (except NOx), with coconut-based biodiesels being the best alternative.

Effects of biodiesel degree of unsaturation, chain length and physical properties on tailpipe oxides of nitrogen (NOx)

Gelu Varghese et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of biodiesel degree of unsaturation and chain length on NOx emissions in engines and presents a methodology to decouple these effects. The results show that NOx emissions increase with increasing degree of unsaturation, peaking at an average degree of unsaturation of 1.5. Shorter chain length esters are found to result in lower NOx emissions, with a decrease observed until a chain length factor of 0.765 is reached.
