Human Milk, Infant Formula, and Other Milks Fed to Infants and Toddlers in the United States, NHANES 2007-2018

Jessica E. Decker et al.

Summary: This study examines the types of milk fed to US infants and toddlers in the past 12 years. The findings show that the proportion of infants fed infant formula only has decreased, while the proportion of infants fed partially hydrolyzed infant formula has increased. Among toddlers, cow's milk remains the predominant milk type consumed.

Comprehensive Analysis of Fatty Acid and Oxylipin Patterns in n3-PUFA Supplements

Elisabeth Koch et al.

Summary: This study analyzed n3 supplements made from fish oil, krill oil, and micro-algae oil using LC-MS. The results showed significant variations in total oxylipins and non-esterified fatty acid content among the supplements, with krill oil having the highest concentration and micro-algae oil having the lowest. The study also identified terminal hydroxylation products as authenticity markers for micro-algae oil. Refined micro-algae and fish oil had low levels of non-esterified fatty acids.

Early detection of lipid oxidation in infant milk formula by measuring free oxylipins-Comparison with hydroperoxide value and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance methods

Bianca Ferraz Teixeira et al.

Summary: This study compared the sensitivity of TBARS and hydroperoxide methods in detecting early lipid oxidation. It found that the measurement of free oxylipins is more effective than conventional methods in detecting lipid oxidation and distinguishing between different formulations in infant milk formula.

Method optimization of oxylipin hydrolysis in nonprocessed bovine milk indicates that the majority of oxylipins are esterified

Bianca Ferraz Teixeira et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of different extraction and base hydrolysis protocols on bound oxylipins in bovine milk, finding that 95% of oxylipins in milk were esterified, mostly derived from linoleic acid. Linoleic acid-derived metabolites were the most abundant oxylipin species in both free and bound lipid pools in milk.

Triacylglycerols are preferentially oxidized over free fatty acids in heated soybean oil

Qing Shen et al.

Summary: In heated soybean oil, triacylglycerols (TAGs) are preferentially oxidized over free fatty acids (FFAs) despite FFAs being considered the preferred substrate for oxidation. Additionally, the formation velocity and turnover of esterified oxylipins are higher than that of free oxylipins.
