Preparation of a biobased polyelectrolyte complex from chitosan and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and its antibacterial characteristics

Dong Yang et al.

Summary: By using chitosan and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as raw materials, a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) was successfully prepared through strong electrostatic interaction. The reactive contact area between the two bio-based polyelectrolytes was enlarged by preparing a crosslinked vacuolar structure without the use of a cross-linker. The yield and bibulous rate of PEC were significantly affected by the preparation conditions, yielding a PEC with 71.2% yield when pH, CMC-Na-to-CTS ratio, stirring speed, and reaction temperature were optimized.
