Economic and heating efficiency analysis of double-shell downhole electric heater for tar-rich coal in-situ conversion

Zhendong Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a downhole electric heater designed for tar-rich coal in-situ conversion was studied. A closed double-shell structure was proposed to improve the performance and economy of the heater. Four downhole electric heaters were experimentally studied, with a single-shell heater used as the control. The results showed that the mass flow rate greatly impacted the total cost, and the parallel double-shell downhole electric heater had the highest total cost. Additionally, the thermal radiant was identified as the main way the heater shell lost heat, accounting for 78.91%-92.91%.

Multi-Physics Simulation of Tar-Rich Coal In Situ Pyrolysis with a Multiregion Homogenization Treatment

Qianhao Ye et al.

Summary: A macroscopic multi-physics simulation of tar rich coal in situ pyrolysis (TCISP) is conducted by coupling heat transfer, fluid flow, and chemical reaction in a fractured porous zone. A novel TCISP pattern of gas injection between fractured zones is proposed, which results in a rapid increase production of oil. The influence of the fractured zone and porosity on the process is investigated.

Comparative study and hybrid modeling approach with POD for convective drying performance of porous moist object with multi-impinging jet and channel flow configurations

Fatih Selimefendigil et al.

Summary: Comparative studies were performed to analyze the convective drying performance of a porous moist object in channel flow and with multiimpinging jet flow configuration. The results showed that the moisture reduction (MR) was higher for the jet flow arrangement and higher Reynolds number. The hot inlet temperature and object size also affected the drying performance, while the vertical distance between the inlet jets had more impact than the horizontal distance.

Multiphysics responses of coal seam gas extraction with borehole sealed by active support sealing method and its applications

Zhiming Wang et al.

Summary: This research investigates the multiphysics responses of coal seam gas (CSG) extraction with boreholes sealed by active support sealing method. Numerical simulations and laboratory studies were carried out to analyze the impact of different active support materials on coal stability, porosity, permeability, and air-leakage. The results show that active support improves coal stability, restrains porosity and permeability variations, and significantly reduces air-leakage. The introduction of delayed swelling material as active support leads to fewer meso- and micropores and fractures than foam cement material. Field-scale evaluations demonstrated that boreholes sealed by delayed swelling material have higher methane concentrations and fluxes compared to those sealed by foam cement material.

The Hole Sealing Technology of Solid-Liquid Materials with Three Pluggings and Two Injections for Gas Extraction Hole in the Coal Mine

Shiyao Yu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the sealing quality of gas extraction holes and its impact on the extracted gas concentration. A hole sealing technology using solid-liquid materials with three pluggings and two injections is proposed. Field tests demonstrate that this technology can enhance the sealing effect of gas extraction holes and improve the recovery rate of gas concentration.

A POD-Galerkin reduced order model of a turbulent convective buoyant flow of sodium over a backward-facing step

Sabrina Star (''Kelbij'') et al.

Summary: A Finite-Volume based POD-Galerkin reduced order modeling strategy for steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulation is extended to low-Prandtl number flow, by varying the Richardson number to characterize the effects of buoyancy. The reduced order model successfully predicts velocity and temperature profiles in good agreement with RANS simulations, and captures local Stanton number and skin friction distribution at the heated wall.

Influences of negative pressure on air-leakage of coalseam gas extraction: Laboratory and CFD-DEM simulations

Zhiming Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the influences of negative pressure on air-leakage and its driving mechanism is crucial in controlling methane concentration during coal seam gas extraction. Experimental results demonstrate that the increase in the absolute value of negative pressure leads to three stages of air-leakage behavior. The balance of the blockage structure in fractures contributes to the increase in air-leakage with the absolute value of negative pressure. Contact forces between aggregated particles play a key role in determining the behavior of the blockage structure and subsequent air-leakage during different stages.
