The Fundamental Role of Lipids in Polymeric Nanoparticles: Dermal Delivery and Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Cannabidiol

Mark Zamansky et al.

Summary: This study presents a nanoparticulate platform for the topical treatment of inflammatory conditions using cannabidiol (CBD). Lipid-stabilized nanoparticles (LSNs) were shown to effectively encapsulate CBD and suppress the release of IL-6 and IL-8. Different stabilizing lipids, including cetyl alcohol, stearic acid, lauric acid, and a combination of stearic acid and lauric acid, were examined for their effects on CBD release and skin permeation.

Neuroprotection of Cannabidiol, Its Synthetic Derivatives and Combination Preparations against Microglia-Mediated Neuroinflammation in Neurological Disorders

Muhammad Yousaf et al.

Summary: The lack of effective treatment for neurological disorders has prompted researchers to explore new therapeutic strategies. Neuroinflammation, caused by activated microglia, is emerging as an important target for treating neurological dysfunction. Cannabidiol (CBD), derived from Cannabis sativa L., has shown promising therapeutic effects for various neurological disorders. This review summarizes the anti-neuroinflammatory activities of CBD and its derivatives, focusing on their molecular mechanisms of action. The studies shed light on the development of CBD as a novel therapeutic option for neurological disorders where neuroinflammation plays a role.

Comparative assessment of antimicrobial, antiradical and cytotoxic activities of cannabidiol and its propyl analogue cannabidivarin

Chiara Russo et al.

Summary: The study compared the cytotoxic, antiradical, and antibacterial activities of cannabidiol and cannabidivarin, two phytocannabinoids derived from Cannabis. Both cannabinoids exhibited medium levels of cytotoxicity in cancer and normal cells, with no significant antioxidant capacity demonstrated. The antimicrobial activity showed no notable differences between the two cannabinoids except for cannabidiol being more effective against Staphylococcus aureus.

Synthesis of Starch Nanoparticles and Their Applications for Bioactive Compound Encapsulation

Diana Moran et al.

Summary: Starch nanoparticles (SNPs) are gaining attention as a sustainable alternative to common nanomaterials due to their natural, renewable, and biodegradable properties. The synthesis method and operational conditions strongly influence the properties of SNPs, which are used as a vehicle for controlled release of bioactive compounds in various fields. The size of SNPs plays a significant role in encapsulation properties and releasing processes of bioactive compounds.

Stability Study of Cannabidiol in the Form of Solid Powder and Sunflower Oil Solution

Ema Kosovic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical stability of cannabidiol (CBD) in solid powder and oil solution forms, finding that CBD powder was significantly more stable compared to CBD in oil solution. This finding has important implications for the practical administration of CBD dissolved in oil matrices, highlighting the significance of understanding the acceptable shelf life for CBD products.

Cannabidiol-dihydroartemisinin conjugates for ameliorating neuroinflammation with reduced cytotoxicity

Fanfan Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the combination of CBD and DHA has an additive effect in inhibiting LPS-induced nitric oxide production, but synergizes in inhibiting BV-2 cellular viability, suggesting an amplification of cytotoxicity. The CBD-DHA conjugate C3D eliminated cytotoxicity associated with single CBD/DHA use without compromising anti-neuroinflammation activity. C3D was more potent than C2D and C4D in inhibiting LPS-induced NO and mRNAs of iNOS and IL-1 beta, indicating that linker length is critical for the anti-inflammatory activities of CBD-DHA conjugates.

Characterization of nanoparticles made of ethyl cellulose and stabilizing lipids: Mode of manufacturing, size modulation, and study of their effect on keratinocytes

Mark Zamansky et al.

Summary: The study developed a nanoparticulate system using ethyl cellulose for encapsulation of sparingly soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients such as CBD and CUR. By controlling process parameters and incorporating stabilizing lipids, the nanoparticles showed improved yield and active ingredient-to-polymer ratio. The nanoparticles demonstrated low toxicity in keratinocytes and effective internalization, suggesting their potential for dermal delivery.
