Nano formulation approaches for curcumin delivery- a review

Kumararaja Gayathri et al.

Summary: Curcumin, derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa Linn, has been extensively studied for its potential in treating various diseases. However, its inadequate intake and low aqueous solubility have posed challenges. To overcome these challenges, nanotechnology has been used to improve the absorption, solubility, and bioavailability of curcumin. Nano formulations of curcumin have shown promise in overcoming the limitations of traditional curcumin-based medications.

Improved water solubility, antioxidant, and sustained-release properties of curcumin through the complexation with soy protein fibrils

Fuyun Ji et al.

Summary: Soy protein fibrils (SPF) with high aspect ratios showed increased surface hydrophobicity, enabling them to form soluble complexes with curcumin. However, excessive heating decreased the hydrophobicity of SPF. SPF heated for 8 hours (SPF8) exhibited a strong affinity for curcumin through hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The SPF8-curcumin complex showed enhanced solubility, antioxidant capacity, and sustained-release properties.

Targeted delivery of curcumin in breast cancer cells via hyaluronic acid modified mesoporous silica nanoparticle to enhance anticancer efficiency

Shatadal Ghosh et al.

Summary: Curcumin, a natural antioxidant, was delivered through Mesoporous silica nanoparticles to enhance its anticancer efficacy by targeting cancer cells with hyaluronic acid. The synthesized nanohybrid showed cell death in MDA-MB-231 cells and decreased tumor volume in tumor-bearing mice by inducing ROS, cell cycle arrest, and modulation of apoptotic pathways. Overall, the study found that the nanohybrid had increased anticancer efficacy compared to free curcumin.
