Potential Pharmaceutical Applications of Quercetin in Cardiovascular Diseases

Paraskevi Papakyriakopoulou et al.

Summary: This comprehensive literature review critically evaluates the pathophysiological mechanisms of quercetin in relation to cardiovascular risk factors and atherosclerosis, and assesses its potential application in cardiovascular diseases. Experimental studies suggest that quercetin has multiple effects, including antihypertensive, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, anti-atherosclerotic, and cardioprotective effects. Clinical studies have shown beneficial effects of quercetin on glycemic and lipid parameters, but inconsistent effects on other cardiometabolic risk factors. The design of clinical trials and the lack of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic tests prior to the studies may contribute to this inconsistency. Further well-designed preclinical and clinical studies are needed to examine the therapeutic mechanisms and efficacy of quercetin in cardiovascular diseases.
