Reproducibility of deep learning based scleral spur localisation and anterior chamber angle measurements from anterior segment optical coherence tomography images

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to apply a deep learning model for automatic localization of the scleral spur (SS) in anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) images and compare the reproducibility of anterior chamber angle (ACA) width between deep learning located SS (DLLSS) and manually plotted SS (MPSS). The results showed that the agreement and repeatability between DLLSS and MPSS were comparable.

Comparison of Lens Extraction Versus Laser Iridotomy on Anterior Segment, Choroid, and Intraocular Pressure in Primary Angle Closure Using Machine Learning

Natalia Ivanovna Kurysheva et al.

Summary: Using machine learning method DD-SIMCA, this study confirms the efficacy of early lens extraction (LE) in primary angle closure (PAC). LE shows better outcomes in terms of postoperative anterior chamber topography and intraocular pressure (IOP) compared to laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI). This provides further clinical and anatomical support for LE as an effective treatment for PAC.

Expanding the DD-SIMCA concept: A case study of precision medicine

O. Rodionova et al.

Summary: The proposed approach suggests using the DD-SIMCA method, specifically the Full Distance (FD), as an analytical signal to classify samples. Medical data is used to demonstrate this approach. FD values help assess how closely each patient is related to the control group of healthy subjects. Furthermore, the FD values are used in a PLS model to predict distance from the target class and probability of recovery, enabling personalized medicine. This approach has potential applications in various fields, such as preserving and restoring cultural heritage sites.

Comparative study of predictors of hypotensive efficacy of laser peripheral iridotomy and lensectomy in patients with primary anterior chamber angle closure based on machine learning methods

N. I. Kurysheva et al.

Summary: In this study, we analyzed the impact of various anatomical and clinical parameters on the hypotensive efficacy of laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) and lensectomy (LE) in primary anterior chamber angle closure (PAC). The study included 60 PAC patients who underwent LE or LPI. The reduction of intraocular pressure (Delta IOP) was used as the response to evaluate treatment efficacy. The study found that both treatments resulted in a significant decrease in IOP, but LE had a greater Delta IOP compared to LPI. Variable selection was used to determine the primary predictors of the outcomes. The study identifies the general and specific factors that contribute to the IOP decrease in LPI and LE, which may be explained by the mixed mechanisms of PAC development.

Hybrid Variation-Aware Network for Angle-Closure Assessment in AS-OCT

Jinkui Hao et al.

Summary: We propose a 2D-3D Hybrid Variation-aware Network (HV-Net) for open-appositional-synechial ACA classification from AS-OCT imagery. The model reconstructs 3D iris surface and extracts cross-sectional appearance features and iris morphological features. It utilizes paired AS-OCT images acquired in dark and light illumination conditions to accurately characterize configurational changes in ACAs and iris shapes.

Digital Gonioscopy Based on Three-dimensional Anterior-Segment OCT An International Multicenter Study

Fei Li et al.

Summary: This study developed and evaluated a 3-dimensional deep-learning-based automated digital gonioscopy system (DGS) that can detect important characteristics in eyes with suspected primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). The system demonstrated high accuracy in identifying narrow iridocorneal angles and peripheral anterior synechiae. This technology has the potential to be widely used for screening high-risk PACG patients in primary eye care.

Mitochondrial health quality control: measurements and interpretation in the framework of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine

Lenka Koklesova et al.

Summary: Mitochondria play a crucial role in cellular functions and their damage can compromise overall organ functionality. The outcomes of mitochondrial stress vary significantly among individuals, leading to a wide range of associated pathologies. Distinguishing disease predisposition and progression in the context of compromised mitochondrial health is a challenging task in the paradigm shift towards personalized medicine. Robust quantification of mitochondrial health is essential for the successful implementation of personalized medicine concepts. The Mitochondrial Health Index (MHI) and Bioenergetic Health Index (BHI) hold potential as quantification systems to assess mitochondrial health and its relevance to disease development and severity.

All around suboptimal health - a joint position paper of the Suboptimal Health Study Consortium and European Association for Predictive, Preventive and Personalised Medicine

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: The first two decades of the 21st century are marked by a rise in non-communicable diseases, causing immense socio-economic burden and a decrease in the age of maladaptive individuals. These chronic conditions progress over time and can lead to irreversible severe complications. Advanced strategies in bio/medical sciences and healthcare are focusing on suboptimal health conditions within the framework of Predictive, Preventive, and Personalized Medicine. Various medical areas are proposed to strongly benefit from these strategies, including stress overload associated pathologies, male and female health, and planned pregnancies.
