Increasing Incidence of Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer

Summary: Early-onset colorectal cancer, which accounts for 10% of cases, is increasing in incidence, particularly in high-income countries. Patients often present with advanced disease in the left colon, and one in six patients has deficient DNA mismatch repair. Screening is recommended to begin at 45 years of age.

Analysis of changes in microbiome compositions related to the prognosis of colorectal cancer patients based on tissue-derived 16S rRNA sequences

Summary: This study analyzed microbiome compositions in tumor and normal tissues of CRC patients, and revealed that certain pathogenic bacteria were more abundant in tumor tissues. Additionally, bacteria associated with bacterial motility proteins and bile acid secretion pathways were enriched in tumor tissues. Interestingly, the abundance of pathogenic bacteria was positively correlated with the expression of host genes relevant to cell cycle and proliferation. Moreover, the presence of pathogenic bacteria was unexpectedly higher in nonrecurrent CRC patients compared to those with recurrence.
