Analysis of entire hepatitis B virus genomes reveals reversion of mutations to wild type in natural infection, a 15 year follow-up study

Qin-Yan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the evolutionary data of HBV genomes using next generation sequencing and found that mutations in HBV may revert to wild type in natural infection. Sequencing of HBV genomes revealed specific mutations in some subjects in 2007, which were absent in 2019.

Approaches for Detection of Hepatitis B Virus Pre-S Gene Deletions and Pre-S Deleted Proteins and Their Application in Prediction of Higher Risk of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Development and Recurrence

Yueh-Te Lin et al.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), closely associated with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, is a common and lethal human cancer worldwide. Pre-S deleted proteins, mutant forms of HBV large surface proteins, function as oncoproteins and promote the development of HCC. Detection of pre-S gene deletions and pre-S deleted proteins can serve as valuable biomarkers for predicting higher risks of HCC development and recurrence. Various methods, including DNA sequencing, gene chips, next-generation sequencing, and immunohistochemistry staining, have been used for the detection of these biomarkers.

Sparse logistic regression revealed the associations between HBV PreS quasispecies and hepatocellular carcinoma

Jian-an Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between HBV preS region quasispecies and HCC development and developed a diagnostic model for HCC using HBV preS region quasispecies. The results validated the association between nucleotide entropy in HBV preS region and HCC development, and the prediction model showed high accuracy in classifying HCC and CHB patients.

Changes in the Epidemiology of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Asia

Yao Liu et al.

Summary: The incidence and mortality of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Asia are among the highest in the world. Understanding the epidemiological trends and risk factors of HCC is crucial for implementing measures to reduce the incidence in Asia.

Using Quasispecies Patterns of Hepatitis B Virus to Predict Hepatocellular Carcinoma With Deep Sequencing and Machine Learning

Shipeng Chen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that HBV rt sequences contain vital features for predicting HCC, with the random forest model performing the best in prediction, and the HCC risk scores outperforming alpha-fetoprotein for accurate distinction between HCC and CHB patients.

Increased hepatitis B virus quasispecies diversity is correlated with liver fibrosis progression

Hongkai Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that HBV quasispecies diversity increases with fibrosis progression in patients with chronic hepatitis B, specific mutations are more common in patients with advanced liver disease, and there are differences in viral complexity and diversity in CHB patients at different stages of fibrosis with similar age.
