Biomimicking Leaf-Vein Engraved Soft and Elastic Membrane Promotes Vascular Reconstruction

Jinghan Fang et al.

Summary: Hierarchical vasculature reconstruction is crucial for tissue regeneration, and a leaf-vein mimetic membrane can provide a running track for blood vessels, accelerating their formation and maturation. It also promotes differentiation of endothelial cells and upregulates angiogenesis-related gene expression, providing proper directional guidance for tissue regeneration.

3D Lung-on-Chip Model Based on Biomimetically Microcurved Culture Membranes

Danielle Baptista et al.

Summary: A more physiological realistic culture environment for alveolar cells based on biomimetically microcurved track-etched membranes was proposed. The membranes were shaped into hexagonally arrayed hemispherical microwells using a combination of 3D microfilm forming and ion track technology. The alveolar cells could fully line the microwell structures on the top side of the membranes, and could be cultured successfully for 14 days. The presented lung-on-a-chip model could inspire the development of other membrane-based OoCs in the future.

Integration of substrate- and flow-derived stresses in endothelial cell mechanobiology

Claire A. Dessalles et al.

Summary: In this review, Dessalles and colleagues examine how vascular endothelial cells respond to mechanical forces from blood flow and physical contact with the basement membrane. They focus on how endothelial cells integrate and interpret different mechanical cues simultaneously, highlighting the importance of understanding these complex interactions in health and disease. The authors also discuss the challenges and open questions in the field of endothelial cell mechanobiology.
