Summary: Recently, the Vision Transformer (ViT) model has gained popularity for computer vision tasks. However, it still faces challenges in areas with limited data, such as medical image analysis. This paper proposes an improved ViT-Patch architecture that balances the feature learning between class and patch tokens, and introduces a secondary task for tumor localization.

Deep convolutional neural network-based classification of cancer cells on cytological pleural effusion images

Xiaofeng Xie et al.

Summary: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Cytology plays a crucial role in the initial evaluation and diagnosis of lung cancer patients. However, due to the subjective nature of cytopathologists and regional variations in diagnostic levels, liquid-based cytological diagnosis results have low consistency, leading to misdiagnoses and missed diagnoses. In this study, a weakly supervised deep learning method using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) was performed for the classification of benign and malignant cells in lung cytological images. The results showed high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in classifying malignant and benign lesions using the proposed method. In comparison, senior and junior cytopathologists had higher and lower average accuracies, respectively. Moreover, the proposed deep learning method is expected to assist pathologists with different levels of experience in the diagnosis of cancer cells in cytological pleural effusion images in the future.

Metastatic Carcinoma in Effusions

Vinod B. Shidham

Summary: The serous cavity can be involved by various tumors, including rare central nervous system tumors. Lymphatic vessels are the main route for metastasis to the serosa, leading to effusion. Effusion fluid cytology generally provides a higher diagnostic yield compared to biopsy of the serous lining, but interpretation can be challenging.

Malignant Pleural Effusion: Presentation, Diagnosis, and Management

Shameek Gayen

Summary: Malignant pleural effusions are common in cancer patients, often resulting from metastasis to the pleura from lung or breast cancer. The presence of malignant effusion indicates advanced disease and poor survival, typically presenting as a large unilateral exudative effusion and dyspnea. The best diagnostic approach is thoracic imaging and cytology, and treatment focuses on symptom relief.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Summary: Effusions in serous cavities are pathological processes caused by various factors, resulting in reactive changes in mesothelial cells and a wide range of morphological alterations. Neoplastic effusion specimens are common in tertiary care settings, with cytologic evaluation typically showing malignant cells. The wide cytomorphological spectrum of reactive mesothelial cells poses a significant challenge in effusion fluid cytology interpretation.
