Nanomechanical hydrodynamic force sensing using suspended microfluidic channels

Alberto Martin-Perez et al.

Summary: Microfluidics is a versatile technique for analyzing flowing particles and measuring the mechanical properties of biological cells using hydrodynamic forces. However, there is currently no available method for directly measuring and tracking these hydrodynamic forces. This study introduces a novel approach using suspended microchannel resonators (SMRs) to directly measure the hydrodynamic force on flowing particles by analyzing the induced resonance changes. The sensitivity of this measurement depends on the device used, so the geometry and materials of the SMRs were considered to improve the dependence on SMR resonance frequency.

ADVANCED THERMOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES MEASUREMENTS USING HEATER-INTEGRATED FLUIDIC RESONATORS

Juhee Ko et al.

Summary: Measurement of thermophysical properties of liquids on microscale has been rarely studied. Recently, a new metrology using heater-integrated fluidic resonators (HFRs) has been proposed to simultaneously measure the three intrinsic properties of small-volume liquids. In this paper, an improvement in thermophysical properties measurement performance with HFRs by switching the environment to vacuum is demonstrated. The dynamic range of thermal conductivity is expanded by about 50 times and the sensitivity of heat capacity is increased by about 2 times in vacuum environment.

Towards highly specific measurement of binary mixtures by tandem operation of nanomechanical sensing system and micro-Raman spectroscopy

Juhee Ko et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an integrated system of nanomechanical sensing with suspended microchannel resonator (SMR) and micro-Raman spectroscopy, which is used to differentiate binary mixtures with the same density and viscosity. Through density and viscosity measurements with SMR, different mixtures of ethanol-water, ethanol-glycerol, and ethanol-heavy water can be differentiated. Micro-Raman spectroscopy is configured on top of the SMR for highly specific measurements, accurately providing the mole fraction of different binary mixtures.

Self-assembled silicon membrane resonator for high vacuum pressure sensing

Taeyeong Kim et al.

Summary: In this paper, a mechanical vacuum gauge based on a circular membrane resonator is proposed and its high responsivity is verified. The resonant characteristics of the fabricated membrane resonator are measured and the vibration amplitudes are monitored at various vacuum pressures. The amplitude measurement is found to be specifically useful for real-time vacuum monitoring.

Nanomechanical Molecular Mass Sensing Using Suspended Microchannel Resonators

Alberto Martin-Perez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phenomena occurring in a suspended microchannel resonator when a hydrostatic pressure is applied to the inner fluid, showing that pressure-induced mass effects can be used to characterize different fluids with high precision. The proposed device can accurately measure the mass density of unknown liquid samples and characterize gas mixtures by measuring their average molecular mass, demonstrating resolutions of 0.7 mu g/mL and 0.01 atomic mass units, respectively.

Avoiding transduction-induced heating in suspended microchannel resonators using piezoelectricity

Damien Maillard et al.

Summary: Calorimetry of single biological entities remains challenging, but suspended microchannel resonators (SMRs) show promise for real-time detection of various analytes. In this study, researchers demonstrated on-chip piezoelectric transduction of SMRs and used a laser Doppler vibrometer to analyze its effects. The results show that applying a laser to a water-filled SMR causes a resonance frequency shift attributed to a local increase in temperature, with convection playing a role in dissipating the heat induced by the laser.
